Gearbox leak - rear main seal

    Hi all,

Looks like I’ll be pulling off my gear box for a rear main seal replacement.

I was just wondering if anyone could please advise me of any other maintenance jobs I should do, concerning an FFR 1990 Perentie, approx 90k kms, whilst I have the gearbox out.

    Cheers
    Chris

Are you sure it is engine oil leaking? In any case, while the box is out, check carefully that the oil pump cover on the front of the gearbox is not leaking. These tend to warp and leak oil into the clutch housing. (You could have a mixture of engine and gearbox oil - i.e. could be both leaking.)

Is it the engine rear main seal or the gearbox rear main seal you are talking about.

I assumed it was the engine rear seal, since there is no need to take out the gearbox to replace the gearbox rear seal.

I was going to comment but I see the gurus have it all covered.

Just a side comment - did the LT95s in the Perenties have the fibre oil pump impellers or the updated metal one? If the old one then something to look at when the gearbox and engine seperated - also as mentioned a good time to reseal the oil pump cover.

I did mine in my 101 a while back (thanks Bearman for the advice etc).

Thanks Garry - a lot of them would still have the original fibre oil pump gears. Ones that have been recoed should have been upgraded with the metal one but I have seen some that weren't. Good idea to check it and the input shaft seal at the same time.

MMMM Maybe I should check mine too.
Just in the process of removing the Isuzu bell housing from the LT95A and replacing it with the Rangerover one to stick in my FC.

Just pulled the oil pump cover off the LT95A. Its got the fibre gears.
Where do I buy the steel replacements from?
For interest it is box number 29c 07143 but looks as if the original number has been ground off and restamped.

If the correct oil is used and the box has not failed so bits of metal go through the pump the old fibre gear works fine - mine was 40 years old and still in great condition when I replaced it - simply because the gearbox was out.

So not in itself something to pull the gearbox but if it is out something to consider.
