As I said on another thread recently, I regard the water separator as a cheap/handy pre-filter for larger particles/sludge. I did substitute the Lucas unit for Raycor Filter, but in the end re-fitted the Lucas separator.
I know a lot of crew have converted the stock sedimenter to delphi 296 filter which is straight-forward but I wonder about the logic as those 296 filters are rated around 5-10 micron and the stock isuzu main filter is 25 micron -i assumed it would be more logical/ideal to go from larger micron filter to lower micron? Obviously the standard sedimenter has no filter so no/little flow restriction.

30 or 40 micron would be ok. Even down to 20 or 10 micron would be ok, just as long as you can bypass the filter if you get a bad batch and keep blocking filters.
This happened to me when I replaced the sedimenter with a spin on filter. What I didn’t realise was that the filter came with 2 & 4 micron filters (from memory), which was all ok until corrugations shook up the tank and set free rust particles and other crud.
I think an inline filter (100 micron) before the lift pump is more important.

There is no point is having two filters. The sedimenter is simply to protect the lift pump and it does that. Multiple filters is just wasting money.
Possibly true. But Land Rover did fit two fuel filters to the series 3 stage 1 Isuzus. Here’s some pages from the Australian supplement to the owners handbook.

I've had some floating crud get through the sedimentor, now I run a cheap in line filter before the lift pump.
