Perentie MP - Swivel housing and steering box replacement. I need advice.

Hi - I need some advice. My Perentie recently had the gear box partly rebuilt and the transfer case 'fixed' (leak?) sorry I'm not clearer. Point is now it needs another over 5k of work rebuilding the swivel housing and the steering box replaced, including new 'lines' being made by pirtek, plus a new brake fluid cap (but they say it needs the whole thing bc can't buy just the cap). I'm just reeling and wondering if anyone can help me understand any ways I can help make this fix cheaper. Thanks - eila

Hmm. I can only offer a few suggestions:

    1) Ask for a 2nd opinion? (Eg - KLR automotive. Ask them - perhaps they can recommend someone local to you?)

    or

    2) Learn how to do the repairs yourself (easier said that done - I know)?

Power steering was never fitted by the factory to the 4x4 Perenties - there are various ways to have it fitted, but that can explain why new 'lines' need to be fabricated by Pirtek. From memory companies like KLR sell a power steering 'kit' - hence my suggestion to ask them (they may have the lines in stock -if it was their kit fitted)

    Cheers,
    GG.

What lines need to be made by Pirtek?

KLR have flexible brake hoses. They may also have the hard lines. They have some clearance specials on including lines at the moment if I recall correctly. I’ll check their recent emails.

If you are doing a steering box replacement it might be worth looking ag a power steering upgrade. KLR does upgrades.

Have you had a look through their parts at klr.com.au? They are a Perentie specialist.

I have a complete 6x6 front axle here I bought from the Army auctions as spare for my 6x6. Its gone so dont need it any more. Open to offers but I am in Qld west of Gympie so a fair hike to pick it up.

Swivel hubs are fairly simple to rebuild if you are confident on the tools. There are a few good videos on line covering it.
The brake master cylinder cap is same as XD Falcon.

    Thanks

Thanks everyone - I bought both my cars from Brad and the KLR team and have emailed them with the same question so hope to hear back about parts soon and a quote. They also put power steering in for me. I'm researching what I need and appreciate any and all info! My nephew is a mechanic and has offered to help me do it (me help him more like). Also the axle near Gympie isn't such a bad idea because I have family nearby who might be able to pick it up for me. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions.

Here is a photo. Someone on here or KLR should be able to tell you approx what its worth. Its bloody heavy though. Its all I could do to drag it along the floor to get a pic. Getting weak in my old age (80).

    Hi Keith,
What diff is that? Apart from a 6x6 Perentie.
    It's not a rover housing.
Doesn't the 6x6 Perentie have a wider track than a 4x4 and the civilian 6x6?

I dont know much about them but yes they are a wider track but the swivels and CV joints are the same. My 6x6 was an early prototype and had Borg Warner diffs with factory Diff Locks.
I think one of the Perentie Gurus on here could tell you more. I dont know the ratios either Sorry
