Thread: Army S2 A/B FC ?

There has been a discussion somewhere on AuLRO about 18 months ago, possibly in REMLR http://www.aulro.com/afvb/remlr-army...tml#post595844. The dates of the original trials seem to make it too early for it to have been a SIIB 110 F/C, that and the fact that it fell over quite a lot resulting in it's trial being abandoned, would suggest that it was a SIIA 109 F/C

The SIIA 109 in the image below may well have been the trials vehicle, if indeed it ever was in the Australian Army.

It is a NSW registered vehicle and apparently at Corowa several or three years ago.

I'll post up the pics as soon as I can.... I came across them during some research. There not of the complete vehicle, but it is definitely there. I couldn't make out the ARN, but may be able to do so after some processing. You can see the big X on the tac sign :-)

We have one photo, and intereswtingly the ARN is that of a trailer in the books, so ADE must have reused them. It was part of the 6 tropical trials photos in the inter chapter, but the FC photo will make it to it's own page at some stage.

No doubt about it. That is an SIIA 109" Forward Control.

The easiest ways to identify the difference in that sort of pic is the headlamps being positioned between the side marker and turn indicator lamps. A second way to identify the IIa is that the chassis is almost exactly the same as an Aus. Military IIa chassis with the axle assembly overslung the rear springs. (The SIIb has the rear axle assembly underslung the springs and the headlamps below the side marker and turn indicator lamps.)

In fact that is quite an early example of the SIIa 6cyl - possibly a prototype. Look at the turn indicator lamps (top) and the side marker lamps, they are the glass type not used on the SIIb and possibly not common on the normal control Land Rover SIIa. The rear vision mirrors come off the firewall and not part of the hinges as on the later production FC models.

Unfortunately diana I can't give you the chassis number for it, because the entry for that plate in the arn ledgers is for a trailer!
