Driving back to Melbourne with no 5 trailer behind perentie

Unfortunately that's what I suspected. Something to do with the army getting towards the end of their stockpiles of surplus?

I have finally given up on my old trailer as it had more holes in it than a colander and am looking at replacing it with a No 5. Not keen on over paying at auction in Sydney, then having to pay fuel and a long drive collecting it from Melb! :rolleyes:

Realistically what sort of money should I be looking at? and apart from rust is there anything else to watch out for on them?

You should look at around $1400 for a trailer, absolute max, and there are some at half that in the auction currently, in NSW. It all depends on how much someone really wants one, and how much YOU really want one. I got mine in SA for under $500!
If you want to tow it home, try to find one with logbooks. That will tell you the story of what has done or needs to be done.
Mine had a new lunette, new wheel bearings and new tyres, and I was subsequently supplied with a brand new canvas cover after some "discussions" with the auctioneers.
If you do the usual check of the bearing by holding the tyres front and rear and trying to see what bearing play there is, you should be good.
Remember, they all have 12 pin nato sockets fitted, so unless you have an army landrover, the idea of the light board and plug is a good one.
Other than rust there isn't much to check.
Maybe take some wheel bearing grease and grease up the bearings before you head home.
