I don't use my no 5 for the same thing as my box trailer but I do use it for camping quite a lot full nsw rego keeps sleeping gear and swags dry. No modifications at all even the original single tail/brake light. Tyres are outside the guards but never been a problem, lunette and nato plug just right for the series or use a trailer board if towing with the disco. No 5,s have their uses but they are a little more specialised than a box trailer:)

There should be a terminal strip on the underside of the trailer towards the rear. I would recommend you attach some 5 core trailer loom (available from Autobarn, Supercheap, Repco, etc.), run it up the drawbar and attach a civillian plug (that will fit in the socket on your Jeep).
If you have no intention of using the military plug, you may consider removing the plug and loom altogether (in one piece). Keep it in case you decide to sell the trailer later or sell it.
Yep, I'll think I'll remove in one piece and put aside. I'm also thinking of removing the rear round reflectors and replacing with a similar size combination reflector/stop/taillight lenses. Something that will preserve the look but give it a little more presence on the road and bush.
Something like these. But I'll have to wait and see what I can get to fit and still look right. They are the right diameter but I don't know if there is a hole in the reflector mount that they can drop into or if they need to be slimmer.

You could have flipped the tongue over which lifts your towball height by about 3" and saved the need to modify the drawbar. It's what I did on my D4 which also has a too low ball when used in the standard configuration.
BTW Was it a 1/2 ton workshop platform trailer originally? It's unusual for an original No5 trailer to have shock absorbers.
Ahhh yes. I could have flipped the hitch and that would be great for clearance off road but that would mean that I can't have the jerry can carrier. Even now the clearance to the brake reservoir is marginal.

Finally got mine blue-slipped, changed the lunette to a McHitch, added mudflaps, reflectors, new taillights and longer rated chains. Other than that it was easy ;) Now it also sits level with the Jeep

Got my No.5 regoed today, ARN 176464. Walked into services SA, filled out the form, put down the chassis number, weight, colour, manufacturer and date manufactured, 1969, and paid the money. New plate, no inspection. Cool. BUT, if it was made after 1986 it would need a vin number and plate affixed and an inspection, Blah blah...
I think its a good outcome.
Looking forward to my first tow of it.
