Oh, what a good question. I wish I could tell you the true story. Suffice it to say, you would be as discriminated against as one who was born in Victoria.

I'll give you an example of what occurred recently in my life.
My cousin, a New South Welshman, recently bought a van in Victoria. Using my address, he was given a customer number at Vicroads. He transferred the caravan (a nice long tandem) into his name for about $8. He paid $58.10 a year for registration.
All perfectly legal.
Now, here is the clever thing, in NSW, when you reach a certain age, the NSW government allow you to register one vehicle for free. He and his wife reached that age this year so, his wife now owns the Prado and he recently had his caravan transferred to NSW registration.

The important things for me (And you should you move to just over the border. Wahgunyah would be a good place.):
Trailer registrations are $58.10 p/y
Club permits are $76.40 p/45 days
The S3 is $558.80 p/y
The Perentie (6x6) is $1171.10

What are anyones thoughts on travelling inland with Pintle hook hitch? I am driving to Uluru mid year from Sydney and looking to take the oodnadatta track and wanted to know if I am a MAD MAN thinking I can tow with a pintle for that long without going mad

Did you get a blue slip with it?
If yes, shouldn't be a problem to register.
If no, if it is a problem, get it blue slipped elsewhere.

Pintles and lunettes, I got used to the rattles and bangs.

We are travelling with another two cars - Cruiser and Prado. I can see it now, everyone will be in the other two cars and all the gear will be with me, solo in the 90 but still loving it

Usually, the trailers come with a blue slip. It will mention that in the auction listing.
You then take that blue slip to the RMS office and register the trailer.

Plenty of number 5's registered in NSW. They are listed in the RMS "makes and models" database with the Manufacturer "Australian Defence Industries" (ADI) and model as "No.5 half ton trailer". they were all manufactured in the 1960s, although many had full re-builds in the 1980s or later and AFM dated them as 1985 or 1981.

If you can find the original Army Registration Number or chassis number using the REMLR ARN database will give you a date. If you can find the ARN and don't have a chassis number, then stamp the chassis number from the REMLR database into the drawbar.

Then take the date and chassis number to the Blue slip inspector. Given that manufacture date pre-dates ADR and current rules can't be made retrospective, you should have minimal problems although they often do require front and side reflectors.

If you put a doubled over rubber O ring on top of the lunette before you close the pintle, this takes out 99% of the rattles. I was shown this many years ago and have had no problems in all sorts of conditions.[thumbsupbig]
