    Motorbikes

Never had so much trouble finding something out! I've been all over the place but nobody can tell me what bikes the army use or have used.

I'm aware of KLR250's and I believe that the Americans had KLR650's but with a diesel engine, have they made it to Australia?

Anything else been used in the last, say, 20 years?

Having said that, just found out the DRZ400E was used...

    As a starter

    Suzuki DR-Z400E off-road trail bike

BMW R1150RT-P, used by the Royal Australian Corps of Military Police to perform ceremonial support and operational duties,

    (link https://www.australianfrontlinemachi...es/motorcycles )

These are the ones which have recently or are currently being "de-mobbed".

Oh and just as an aside there are even BETTER things up for sale...

Thanks mate, almost worth asking what they didn't use!

I'm looking to get one, I was hoping for some sort of big off road bike - plenty of options to look at there...

Having said that, just found out the DRZ400E was used...
Before WW2 and during the early part of WW2 civie motor bikes were impressed into service.
popular brands of motor bike were taken from their owners, repaired and placed into service with the owner being given a small amount of compensation.
Due to fuel rationing they couldn't be used by their owners any how.
Later in WW2 the BSA WM20 became advailible and they were similar to the already impressed civie models....the M20 BSA.
At the end of WW2 the Harley WLA 750cc is in service, by either purchase, or ones left behind at the end of the war of the Americans stationed here.
The BSA WM20 seems to have been out of use by the mid 1950s.
The Harley lasted to the mid 1960s.
In 1962 a small number of 250cc BSAs were purchased.....these were the forunner of the B40 BSA.
The 250cc BSAs were out of service before the end of the 1960s.
In 1967 the B40 350cc BSAs were purchased in a large number.
The B40 BSA was similar to the British version in use with the british army at the time.
Aust versions had up swept exhaust and special 1st and 2nd gear ratios.
The B40 lasted until about to 1976 with the last of the spare bikes and parts being auctioned in the early 1980s.
In 1974 the Suzuki GS400 was purchased .
It had slightly lower compression than standard civie models and a lower overall gear ratios for off road work.
It was electric start with kick start back up and Six speed gearbox........it was light years ahead of previous bikes.
The Suzuki GS400 was in two versions, a standard model with extra blackout lighting and a MPs version with flashing lights and a small metal box on the back to hold the black book.
The GS400 was replaced in the mid 1980s to late 1980s.
The Yamaha XT600 replaced the GS400 and now so starts the now long list of jap bikes purchased as required.
