Thanks for that, I have just finished reading a book on tanks called simply "Tanks"by Christopher Foss. I tell you what....the German Tiger and Panther tanks certainly caused headaches for the allied commanders. The Russian T34 tank did provide some competition to the German Tanks.

Tigers had a fearsome reputation but where very ineffective
the tiger 1 only has the same amount of armor in effective thickness as a Sherman frontally and the Sherman is not far behind in side armor.

the panther is what gave the British and american's the most trouble but by then fuel was in short demand and they were in effective as well.

what made the Germans have the advantage at most times was because they where defending they could council and get the first shot off and it was found who ever got the first shot off generally won the engagement.

btw the German commanders and generals where reporting back going why cant we have tanks like the Sherman

You may or may not be correct regarding the Sherman, I won't argue with you there but I do know this, the Shermans were nicknamed "Ronsons" because when hit they immeadiately burst into flames. The Germans admired the Russian T34 because it had the ability to face up to the Tigers and Panthers and the Germans originally where going to build a copy of the T34 but decided to build the Panther instead. Biggest problem with the Panther is it was a very complicated tank to build and suffered constant breakdowns on the battlefield, but nonetheless it caused headaches for the opposition. The Tiger also was a complicated tank to build, it was too heavy and didn't have the range needed to compete in the battlefield, the only way the Shermans could compete (I'm talking standard Sherman here not the Firefly) was to "gang up" on the Tiger and try to get around behind where the armour was not as heavy.

The shermans actully had less chance of catching fire then most other tanks even before they had the wet ammo storage.
Why they typically burnt was after the tank had been hit and abandoned the germans would keep firing at it till it burnt as once a tank has been burnt it is written off.
Btw ronsons where not used by soliders they used zippo's and they dident use the slogon one flick and its lit till the 50's.
The t34 was at the time off barborsa started reasonably well armored but even by late 42 was under armored. What was good about the was their combination of armor mobility reliability but most importantly they were cheap.

Watch thay chieftain video i put here and it will teach ya a lot and worth watching.

Btw if you want a tough tank try the kv2 one held a division off for a day by its self
