    Military vehicles in ANZAC Day parades

    I was a little disappointed to read this in the news today.
    Anzac Day parade: Drivers required to have police safety checks for first time - ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)

    Not so much the police check. More that they don't want military vehicles. Or cars built before 2010.

    I think I'll go and stand in the crowd for a change.

    Vintage army cars and grandkids banned from Anzac Day parades | Starts at 60

    From the article:
    Queensland has no plans to change their vehicle policy. A spokesperson from RSL Queensland told Starts at 60: “They actually have the Military Jeep Club of Queensland carrying veterans and we’ve got no intention to changing that policy, as all of those vehicles are much older than 2010.”

    Unbloodybelievable.
    The veterans and kids are the Most important part of Anzac day So are the old vehicles.
    If these nanny state dickheads think it is unsafe then maybe they should just stay at home.

    This one thing I will fight for with vigour.
    Every year for the last 37years in one form or another I have been driving older military vehicles in ANZAC day marches and often taken the veterans to the pub and back home afterwards to their home and helped them into the house and made sure they were OK.
    The local Nowra march I have been doing for most likely 20 years.
    First up in that march the vehicles lead the march..........ie no one in front of the vehicles and no hold ups.
    The vehicles are in low range and do not exceed walking pace.
    The vehicles drive though the memorial arch and park away from the crowds.
    I always take a digger of some sort and usually the passenger seats are fort for by the diggers themselves or the relatives trying to get the diggers a ride.( the press like photos of the old trucks with the diggers in them)
    It ****s me something bad in the last two marches this country now has to block off streets with fire trucks , garbage trucks because this country is not safe anymore for ANZAC marches...........a safe country ,is that not what our diggers fort for.
    The Melbourne accident in 2011 with a old vehicle had a lot to do with a driver who did not regularly drive the vehicle and was not 100% comfortable with the vehicle and was taking photos just before the accident most likely while driving.
    Years ago for the Wollongong march I would give the same WW1 digger a ride in my jeep( I was only a very young bloke at the time.) every year.
    Slowly every year he would tell me a little bit more about him self and eventually I was invited in the RSL which he would drink with other ww1 vets every year......they never talked about the WW1 days in front of strangers.
    Slowly bit by bit every year I was allowed to know a bit more about him and his history.
    It got to the stage I would pick him up from his house.....he lived by himself and ANZAC was his big day of the year.
    He wore the same old faded suit ........It was his best gear.
    He would be waiting for me at the same time every year at home and I would help his frail body the best way I could into my jeep and sometimes pick up another digger for the march.
    They were too unsteady to march the full length of Crown st Wollongong.......the jeep being open topped, they could wave to the little kids waving the little plastic aussie flags.
    After the march and ceremony I would take him to the RSL for a few hours with his yearly mates and help him though the doors.
    Then it was time to go home.........help him out, open the front door and settle him in his favourite chair to watch the Sydney march and news in front of the TV.......say good buy until next year.
    He never spoke about his family or why he lived alone in a unkept modest fibro house.
    He did start to tell me some of the mates he lost and the horrors of the great war.( true ww1 diggers rarely talked about it)
    One ANZAC day I pulled up to his house............................................. .................................................. .................................................. ......................time ran out to truly know more of this WW1 digger.

    My fathers WW2 Studebaker 6x6 will be carrying this year a digger, most likely a Vietnam vet who cannot walk well and my fathers metals on the grill.

    The vehicles would only be running for maybe an hour, so exhaust pollution would hardly be an issue.

    I Agree.
    They ae most likely trying to come up with every angle they can to exclude the pre 2010 vehicles.
    Makes me wonder why the magic number is 2010.
