A question of helmets.

From talking to lots of people back when I raced and from personal experience over the years I reckon there are pretty much two types of heads, a Shoei suited shaped head or a Arai suited shaped head.

The only helmet that ever really felt 100% comfortable on my noggin was a Arai. I tried all shorts of brands and more than one Shoei over the years. Why so many? If you crash and scrape the helmet you must throw them away if you race motorcycles and that gets expensive so you eventually just end up looking for what ever is the best helmet that is being sold on special at the time.

The comfort rating on that site isn't just an indication of whether it felt comfortable.

The rating was calculated as follows:

Helmet's Operation and Fit 20%
Visor's Ability to Resist Fogging 20%
Noise Inside the Helmet 20%
Ventilation 15%
Aerodynamic Neck Loading 10%
Helmet Weight 5%
Vertical Field of View 5%
Helmet's Ability to Seal out Weather 5%

About the only one of those criteria that would be affected by the shape of your head is the first one and since that criterion also includes the helmet's operation, fit might be as little as 10%.

The other criteria are independent of the shape of your head so would score about the same for everyone.

So while the comfort score might not be 100% accurate for any individual, it is probably about 90% accurate.

Still none of that reduces the need to ensure that the particular helmet you buy fits your head securely and comfortably.

I just dug out my old bell helmet and I can't find an AS # anywhere, I will enclose some pics of the stickers (approved) inside the helmet, see if anyone can identify a compliance sticker, Regards frank.

Frank, does it have a Snell sticker ?

That is the US test certification body. Snell Foundation - home

eg, Motor Bike helmets will have an Snell Mxx number in your case, it designates the year it complied with, usually updated every five years. Current/after 2000 it will have Snell Mxxxx.

Yes Rick, it does have the Snell sticker which is dated 1970, I was uploading the pics when you posted, you will see in the pics now uploaded that it also has a CAMS approval 1971, ah to be young again.
I'm going to get the sponge covers and sponge lining restored/replaced and some new leather around the chin strap, will repaint it and get a pinstriper/signwriter to re-do the Triumph and Trident decorations.
The Helmet was White (gelcoat) when I bought it, I lent it to my brother for a few days and when I got it back it was painted Flat Black (bastard).
So I had to respray it white again, a mate who had a plastic Jap Helmet asked if he could spray his helmet, bad move it ended up melting into a nice plate, let you know how it goes, Regards frank.

Geez Frank, that's older than Stephen Brook's Bell he used to have hanging in his office. :D

My old Shoei was an M85, and my Simpson is an SA90 (SA=Special Application, ie. Motor Racing)

I would've thought your head shape would affect 1 and 3.
Any sort of bad fit would ensure those 2 happened in spades.

I hope all my old helmets are in a landfill somewhere:p
