Last night I began the process of taking the engine apart, I have ordered complete gasket, crank seals and bearing kits, I am hoping the heads barrels and pistons are OK,

If they are, this could save me around $500 to $700, so pulled the heads and barrels off, to my surprise they were in pretty good nick.

Quick trip to the bike shop(2 minutes from my place) and he reckons that a good hone of the barrels might be all they need, of coarse they will need to be measured after to make sure, but it's promising

Head they are all around the same good condition

Barrels seem to be reasonable considering

    Pistons are very good.

Started pulling the engine apart, so I can see what I need to replace, I have ordered a few things, all from the USA, as that's the cheapest and only place for most parts, clutch kit is winging it's way as we speak, and as I expected, it's knackered.

The metal plates are too rusty to use.

Pulled the engine out yesterday, with some help from Ness, turned it upside down and split the cases, as I expected there was a fair bit of crap in the bottom case, but not that much in the top, actually the whole motor is not too bad, bit of WD and turps cleaned most of it, bit of a light sand for the bearing supports and all done basically.

Crank and rods, along with the barrels, pistons and little end bearing and gearbox are going to Greg Ball Motorcycle Engineering for inspection to see what is needed, seals are a given, so a complete engine seal kit is winging it's way as I type this, bearings are a generic Kawasaki item for the H2, so can be sourced here, I'm assuming this will be the most expensive part of this resto, along with the paint job, so I'll be sitting down for this bill.

I'll be taking my rims and hubs off to Spoked Wheels to be respoked and cleaned, rear only at this stage, front will go afterwards, thankfully these places are nearby, so no postage required, actually the spoke place is a 5min walk from my work.
    Cheers Baz.

Some parts started arriving this week, ordered from the US last wednesday evening, first order came Tuesday from Cruzin Image, second order came today from Jessbikes, now that's service and excellent prices, even with the Aussie dollar in the toilet.

Dual disc brake hose kit $37.95 USD

Front master cylinder repair kit $14.95 USD

Complete EBC clutch kit $99.99USD($130.00 AUD) and new 5/8 (17mm) dual disc brake master cylinder $109.00USD($140.00 AUD) bloody bargin.

    Cheers Baz.

More bits turned up this week, 2 brake caliper repair kits, rear guard mounting bolts and bushes, battery box mounting bolts and bushes and a pair of circlip removal plyers for the brake master cylinder.

    Cheers Baz.

You know Redback, I was going to make a joke about seeing the plasticine hinge in your first photo, but I find myself strangely excited by your project.

I'm even starting to watch eBay, hoping a good GPZ900R shows up...

Keep up the great work! (and keep the photos coming)

I remember going into the Dealer in Engadine (just across from the station) and he had a floor full of these,, all sizes and colours, all looked identical from the rear. I must have been old enough to travel, but not old enough to own.

Thanks I think, sorry I don't understand the plasticine bit

Bikesales has heaps of GPZ900Rs for sale, I had the first model, 84 red and grey, great bike.

I remember that dealer, pretty sure he was a Norton or BSA dealer as well, road my first H2 when I was 18 and working in Port Kembla as a carrage builder/fitter on the railways, scared the life out of me.

Just got off the phone for a quote on painting the body work, not that much more than when I got a quote about 10yrs ago, $1500 from Ace of Sprays n the Capalaba in Brisbane, can't find anyone to do it here or anywhere in NSW.
Just waiting on a call about the crankshaft now, it didn't seem that bad, but he thinks it may need a rod kit, I need a re-bore to 1.5mm over though and new pistons and rings, which I was hoping I wouldn't need, it's OK though, I planned for this just in case.

I'm getting to the expensive part of this resto, it all adds up pretty quickly.
    Cheers Baz.
