    ADR Requirements for Reversing Light

I am getting my 1973 Haflinger ready to go back on the road. It has the standard reversing light fitted but it does not work - no power.

Fault finding has highlighted that the housing that is supposed to have the reversing light switch in it does not have the switch - indeed the housing does not have a spot for the switch so it may be a part from a much earlier model.

So the simple question is, are reversing lights an ADR requirement for a 1973 Commercial vehicle?

If they are then this is going to cause me some grief.

    Thanks

Not sure on ADR requirements, but you may get caught in that usually all fitted lights must be in operational condition.

Can you remove the light and say it was never there?

Your compliance plate should show which ADRs it was made to. The relevant one is ADR 1 and applies to passenger vehicles from 1972 and for commercial vehicles over 4.5T GVM after July 1975. Not sure where the Haffy fits in.

If you can't get an original switch I'd be looking at mounting a long lever micro switch near the reverse position.

edit: found the second edition ADR list with a link to the relevant PDF:

Thanks - it doesn't have a compliance plate.

Without replacing a section of the gearbox housing with the correct housing (which would be hard to get) there is no place to bolt in the switch so fabricating something may be needed.

There is some hope looking at the link you posted. The old rego label indicates its manufacture at 01/73 (no doubt it was made 01 in the absence of other information).

So if it is classed as a passenger vehicle it comes under a forward control of less than 8 seats so no reversing light required before 1 Jan 85. As there is specific mention of Fc vehicles the general passenger vehicle requirement which is 1 Jan 72 would not apply - as other and multi purpose passenger vehicles would not apply. If it is classed as an other vehicle the date is 1 July 73.

I guess it comes down to interpretation of what the vehicle is - FC passenger vehicle with less than 8 seats seems to fit.

However I would prefer to have a operating reversing light to save any argument.

    Cheers

    check with ACT requirements.

In NSW you used to be able to fit a switch with warning light-but this has now been disallowed under roadworthy inspection and the light must be activated by selecting reverse.
