I have decided to purchase a pair of these. Having read a few threads on these there was suggestion of using 24 volt lights with a step up transformer.
I can see the benefit of being able to use smaller wire from the transformer to the lights. Is this worth the expense? Would the currant draw going into the transformer be the same as the currant going direct to 12v lights?
300 watts total @ 12 volts = 25 amps.

transformers only work on AC
The inefficiencies and expense of a DC converter to handle that load make the idea of using 12V and heavier cable an excellent idea
A heavy cable at 12V is the answer, DC-DC step up inverters are only around 80% efficient.
Steve
I was also wondering whether the actual lights would be any better at 24 volts?

Surely different globes for 24v? In which case it will output the same amount of light.
And as others have said - it seems you're introducing more complexity and wasting power in the transformer/conversions rather than just using decent cable. I think this is a case of - there's a reason everyone does it that way. 12v, decent cable and you're good.
Good wire gauge and good solid connections is all you need mate.
I run the DC step ups but have a very special set of lights
Pain in the backside to fit it all in and wire.
I would suggest making the install the best you can.
I run twin 30a relays, 1 per light
Tombie. Do you reckon 6mm auto wire is big enough. I think it would be, even though it is really less than 5mm sq.

I went to Drivesafe as I was getting some other gear from him at the time.
I'm pretty sure it's 6mm
The gear I have is red and the other brown... It's been a while!
Use alarm wire for switch wiring and relay trigger wire...
Drivesafe is worth a PM...
