Hi all!
My brother in law has the above mentioned ZD30 Navara. He got it towed home last night with the following symptoms:
- Was driving along an 80km/h road as normal. Witnessed "steam" or a steam like mist under-bonnet, so promptly pulled over and shut the engine down.
- Temp gauge was reading normal (a slight bit over half on the gauge).
- Would not restart after a cool down.
Keeping in mind that's the info I got via a text message, I went up today and started it up. After glowing it, wouldn't start the first time. It seemed sluggish as it turned over, but tried to fire and wouldn't.
Glowed it again and the second time around it fired up and idled very rough. First thought was that it was missing a cylinder. The engine was shaking violently. Quickly noticed high pressure oil mist passing the rocker cover gasket on the passenger side in one spot, so stopped the motor (took a second to stop, but did stop without dieseling). When stopped, I removed the oil cap and steam (almost like hot oil steam, not water steam) was coming out. I only ran the motor for 15secs max, and it was cold prior to me starting it.
So my diagnosis is a head gasket, perhaps the water pump let go causing it to cook, hence doing the head gasket.
What are your thoughts?
It definitely sounded like it was missing a cylinder to me.
Cheers
Keithy

our 2002 D22 has 430,000 on it and has been fantastic. We did need a new radiator at one stage, but I can't remember details now. The head's never been off.
Don.
do some testing- a leak-down test if you have a kit and compressor handy. The leak down test will tell you a bit more about where the breach is. Could be crankcase pressurising (piston).
Google ZD30 hand grenade, its usualy a hole in no4,seen a few around here, even followed one as it blew.It was a cold morning and the oil fog hung around for ages.
It mainly effected earlier pootrols as mentioned, navaras being a lighter vehicle may have not suffered as much.

I've seen hand grenades before, certainly not new to me, although they were all GU's. The Navara has a different setup to the GU, and I'm yet to see one die the same way they do in the patrol.
I think we will roll with head gasket, just trying to determine if the water pump caused it, or it was just a miracle of nature! From what I can see the coolant is good, radiator is clear and looks good/clean inside, and all hoses are good. He said it was ok on the temp gauge when it died, but saw/heard steam, so something isn't right! The bro in law has decided to take it to a workshop for repairs, so I won't be fixing it this time.

Keithy.
Wasnt aware you were across the ZD30 issue.
We had a young bloke at work that had a head gasket failure on a Navara ZD30.He was broke so had a quick/cheap fix, against the repairers reccomendations.Only a head gasket went in.
There were scratches on the piston crowns, the rebuilder said it HAD to have new pistons/rebore.That didnt happen.
It lasted 6 weeks, one piston burnt thru the other was well on the way.The pistons have a heat sealing or surface hardening, the scratches had breached the protection layer.
Make sure your bro gets the piston crowns checked when the head comes off.
