Any number of things like buckled wheel , shockers , wheel bearings , castor bush`s , panhard bush`s.
All else fails a match and some Land Rover Tonic![]()
Ok got a customer coming in tomorrow complaining about steering shimmy at 80+kmh on his petrol patrol. I did wheel bearings and one stub axle on it a few months ago and told him then to get a new steering damper, which he did. All the steering components are in very good condition and have no play in them and also the steering box has no slop either. Any ideas? Im going to check the swivels for slop or looseness tomorrow but if this doesnt fix it where can i go from here? Hes had wheels balanced and alignment done last week but the problem is still there at times. HELP????
Cheers Rod

Sell it.
Tell him to sell it, like I did to brother. Brother had one too, same deal. Shimmy from the day he bought it.
Everything on the front of the vehicle was changed(obviously front and rear tyres when the tyres were done).
Except for a new steering box(adjusted only) all bushes and blts were replaced for new.
Nothing did it.
The it overheated on a trip, and my protesting voice, even tho it turned to more subdued murmurings, finally registered .. He got a D2 TD5, happy as Larry ever since.

My first question would be, is it lifted or not. Patrols are quite iffy about caster angles (2.5 +- 0.5 deg from memory). Excessive caster will cause the wobbles.
Next is wheel bearings. If they have the slightest play, you will most likely see the wobbles. I always set them, drove a couple of k's and checked them again, especially with the GQ set up.
After that, I'd check the panhard rod bushes very carefully and also make sure that the panhard rod nut on the diff hasn't come loose (some GU's had problems with this).
Finally, does the car have genuine Nissan bushes or aftermarket poly bushes? Some people say that poly bushes flog out quickly and cause wobbles.
A lot of people blame unbalanced wheels, but from my experience the problem is most likely caster, worn suspension/steering components, or loose bearings.
Hope that helps
As above but also check shockies, a dud low speed circuit can cause a shimmy when hitting a bump, I've had that on Defender.
Well thank everyone for the helpful replies. Guy didnt turn up prob coz its ****ing down with rain. I have no doubt ill see him soon coz hes always buying kero from us.
Cheers Rod
