    QH, HID, or LED bulb?

    I had a win at an auction. I picked up a Hella 1503 searchlight at the right price. I had been after one for ages to fill the hole on the front of my County after my original one was stolen. I thought I had it well secured too. The thief must have gone to a lot of trouble. Anyway, the auction prize is brand new and has a QH 100w. bulb. My last one had a 150 w. bulb. Has anyone on this site experience with a 150w QH bulb compared to 55w HID and whatever wattage LED?

    I converted some cheap plastic spotties on my ute... They where great, but a bit of delay...

    Where as, on the truck I had both led and hid, led up close out to 400 metres and the hid gave me the range... hid where spots thus the led's where the close range... Mind you we also converted the headlights to led and they where great on low beam but no range on there own, on high...

    To me, hid and led make a great combination as they light the road up for over a 1,000 metres and super bright for the first 500 metres... Makes driving so much safer...

    Those big Hellas have range. Hella claim 800 metres reach with 100w. QH and six lane spread at 300 metres. What I was wondering was if HID or LED are whiter and brighter and have greater range

    led and hid are both bright light, but led have the shorter range of light where have a longer range thus the brightness is out further...

    The range is different but hid do have a slight delay when dipped for a long period on low beam...

    So really, the only difference is the range of light...

    There's a big difference between distance and visibility. You might be able to spot roadside reflectors at 500m with the HID but a roo at 200m will show up better with the halogen.

    If you try a HID, go for 4300k as this is closer to daylight, and much easier on the eyes. My 35w 4300k HID converted Cibie Super Oscars were awesome lights. I'd go 55w next time.

    Pencil or Spreader Beam

    Hello All,

    I have a VY Commodore as my daily driver. The headlights are most likely originals and I have just ordered a replacement set. I also want to install a set of driving lights. The vast majority of my driving is on bitumen. I will be getting a set of New Era relays and upgrading the wiring.

    What sort of difference in distance is there between the light of pencil beam as opposed to a spreader beam? I realise that the spreader beam lights up at a wider angle. I am wondering if the spreader beam lights up a much greater distance than the H4 bulbs on the standard high/low headlights? There is a crew who offers a Pair HELLA Rallye 4000 which come with one Pencil Beam and Spreader Beam. Is this a compromise that no one is happy with? Or is it better to just get a set of either 2 pencil beams or 2 spreader beams?

    Years ago I had a set of pencil beams that I was quite happy with - well until some **** could not work out the difference between "D" and "R" in a parallel car park. They reversed into me and succeeded in wiping out both my driving lights.

    Also, is there something more robust available on the market than number plate light bar that cost around $21 on eBay? As shown in the photo. I would like to get something more robust than the $21 bars. Does anyone know of a company who make a stronger version of the number plate style light bar?

    I will most likely get a variety of Hella Rallye driving lights - this choice may disappoint some however, they reflect - excuse my pun - my budget.
