Thread: Selecting a Roof Rack

Was that because that is the opposite to what he chose?

I'm sorry but I have some huge issues with Andrew. I have very little respect for someone that goes out of his way to cause trouble and arguments within the community. Over the years I have seen him recommending unsafe practices that I just can't tolerate.

On the topic of roof racks, I think I have also chosen Rhino Rack after my research over the last few weeks since we picked up the D4. We will be going a Backbone system with the Pioneer platform on top. My reasoning being:

• I like modular racks
• It is rated to hold 250kg static (so a rooftop tent is viable) on the D4
• They have a good catalogue of accessories
• Making accessories for it only requires their nuts to be used for the mounting
• It is priced well compared to some of the other options I liked such as the Prospeed (I'd love one, but ouch)
• It looks pretty good, I quite like the look of the Backbone system itself

Now to find room in the budget for it amongst the 7 Thousand other things that are on the list!

+1 for the rhino pioneer platform, very versatile. I picked up brand new at the annusl 4wd show for <1200bucks with a shovel and mounts included, backbone system and delivered to my front door.

Tip: despite the instructions telling you to, no need to cut the black infill strips. Just lift them out, clean the channel and mark where the mount bolts go then drill through and refit. Makes for a much better fit up and final look. I also siliconed the mounting socket head cap bolts after fitting to limit water ingress into the mounting holes.

Nuts for the rails are cheaper on eBay you can even get 316 stainless versions

The reduction on roof load can be considerable. For the L322 it's:

Roof rack load (including the mass of roof rack) On-road 100 kg (220 lb), Off-Road 30 kg (66 lb)

I'm very happy with my Pioneer rack too. Only issue with it (and the same would go for all the modular types) is getting under it to properly clean the roof.

Once we get settled in a new place I'll take the rack off and properly clean, polish and wax the roof then put the rack back on.

Perhaps a white vinyl wrap on the roof would be a good idea??
