    Maxwell

    Hello everybody,

This is my first thread, so hi!

I recently purchased a $350 Series IIa SWB- I am pretty sure it was a IIa, although it had no engine, so hard to tell?

I called him Maxwell... because 88" is close to 86 and Maxwell Smart was about as smart as my decision to blind purchase a series IIa SWB with no motor from ebay...

So far, I've stripped the body off and am currently sanding the chassis down- I will be putting a 200tdi in, which I recently acquired.

I will get some photos up soon.

This is my first ever car project and I am mechanically as skilled as a Roo is road wise. So it should be interesting.

    Cheers,

    WIll

First photo that I took of the car- Dad and I drove to Inverell to collect it- Blue Mountains to inverell and back in just under 20 hours!!

Plenty of landy enthusiasts on the way home giving us waves and thumbs up when they saw this

My mechanical skill is limited to the work i used to do on my pushy a few years ago as a teenager. And so I decided to just jump in deep end and start taking it apart- starting with the bumper bar.

The plan with maxwell is to get him up and running. I am NOT doing a resto job. No offence to anyone but i just do not enjoy the look of a restored car- nor do i have the time or budget. I bought the car for $350 and so am trying to get this project finished as cost effectively as possible. I will do as much work myself as possible and where new components are concerned, I will aim to keep the cost below the original outlay fo the car- I haev already purchased a 200TDI for $310 so that plan is still on track!

This is the worst bit of rust I have found on the whole chassis

    Maxwell came sans engine

more progress- you can see my other toy in the background- a zippy little Renault Megane Sport 225 F1 Team Edition- only 30 came to Oz back in 2006! hugs the corners nicely
Mum and Dad were silly enough to loan me some garage space in their newly built house. Understanding parents would be a vast understatement.

I am now sanding the chassis down with a drill... it is tough work to say the least, but the most affordable.
Does anyone have any suggestions on getting in to the tight right angles (of which there are plenty on the chassis) to remove the paint?

    Welcome to the forum.
What you are doing is not new. I say that as encouragement for your interesting project.
Get in touch with your registration authority. It may be as simple as an engine change or it may require engineering. If it needs engineering, it's best to get the engineer on board as soon as possible. Your registration authority should have all the information on their website.
Good luck with it and I look forward to following your build thread.

Had to take the chassis out of the garage to flip it over, so that I could sand the underside.
thats my other baby in the background- renault Megage RS 225 F1 team edition...it's zippy.

    De-rusting, cutting and fabricating

So in the process of sanding the chassis back found some nasty patches of rust on the underside of the chassis. I am really glad I didn't paint over this...
Had a family friend come around and teach me how to cut it out, fabricate new metal to fit in it's place and weld it in.

As you can see, it was a little bit of a complicated spot...

work in progress- that's not me in the pic.

    Finished product.

then got the first layer of paint on

    Hello Will D,

    Congratulations on getting married!

You started off right with a new bride who is understanding enough to allow you to spend time on working on an old Land Rover.

Just be aware that buying some flowers every now and then would be more appreciated than a gasket for the 2A. Keep in the good books and who knows you might be able to increase the size of the vehicle fleet

    Kind Regards
    Lionel
