No worries, happy to answer - it's interesting to try and find out more about it (don't get cross but as a pom I had no idea what a valiant was until today!).
I think it was red by the looks of it.
Small chance it could have come out of a vh pacer, but most likely a Regal or 770.. Any way of telling what colour it was originally?
Sorry to keep bugging with questions...

Ok. Sounds l Iike it is most likely out of a VH Regal 770. The B would represent it was built in '71.

Shakey this motor is a better option than swapping to a 2.25p or god forbid a 2.6. Much better than the ubiquitous holden conversion.
If it is a '71 model then it should have the pre emission controls camshaft. Fit decent carburation and exhaust and it will rev like a turbine. The later CL & CM had emission controls including a camshaft that made them into low speed high torque engines. It is a 265 so already has the big valves. Get a four barrel manifold and Quadrajet, CM split exhaust headers or extractors and hang on.

Thanks everyone - think I've got a fair bit of work to do before it can be driven but I'll try and see if I can start the motor first - it's not seized so that's a start.
OT - did any of the wagons come out with the HP 265?
Who manufactured the Valiant conversion kits for Land Rovers? Were they commercially made or just one off home made jobs?
Cheers, Mick.

Isuzurover - the trim level of the car is what determined what performance level the motor was - if it was Regal or similar, it copped the better motor.
Chrysler got desperate to sell cars later in their life here - if you could invent it on paper, they would build it for you. There were some pov pack sedans (Rangers) that snuck out of the factory with E38 and E49 motors - the ultimate Valiant sleepers.
