Hopefully this question is in the right part of the forum. Please move if it isn't.
I am looking at a 81 S3 in Adelaide that is ex military. I really like it but can't justify the 202 petrol consumption. I'm looking for a landy around 10k and this one is 4k (so the price is right) but I would hope to change the 202 out for a Diesel. Does anyone know how much it would cost me to do a 200di swap (I'd prefer a 4bd1 but I understand the 200 is better suited). I don't think I have the time or the experience to do the swap myself, what would a shop charge including the engineering cert? Can anyone recommend a mechanic somewhere between Adelaide and the GC? I just want the reliability and consumption of diesel.
Just want to say thanks ahead of time for any direction. I can't wait to own my first Landy - my grandfather had a series 1 and i'll never forget the smell and feel of that thing, it was well loved and if I can own one i'll be super stoked.

The Defender 200Tdi should be the easiest swap, but you will need to change the gearbox bellhousing to the 4 cylinder version. Jerry D may have different information on the Defender Vs Disco 200Tdi issue.
No idea on cost, but you can expect to pay around $1500 to $2000 for the engine alone.
The SIII gearbox isn't all that strong, particularly 1st and 2nd. You will likely need to swap the diffs to the 3.54:1 out of a Defender or Stage 1, or fit a Roamerdrive overdrive. You also need to fit the intercooler somewhere.
You should upgrade the braking to disks.
what's a si? A series 1?if it's a lwb and a diesel I'd be interested.
Did the s3s1 have different diffs? I wasn't aware. I've also heard that the gearbox is fairly weak.
I'm interested in the 200di (blanking the turbo) so just a Na diesel. The vehicle I'm looking at already has high ratios. I'm jus wondering the average cost of an engine swap by a garage. I'm just not too keen to see if my mig skills are good enough to change mounts etc, because cutting and welding is required yeah?
Not interested in disks, I've had a few vehicles that had drums and I'll put up with it. If I did go the route to install disks I'd probably just grab a perentie which is what I'm about to do because finding a decent series 3 seems hard. And I'm not a fan of the red 202
The trouble with an engine conversion is that it will need to be inspected in the state it's going to live in. To get a SA mechanic to do the conversion would require him to register it locally and have it inspected in SA, before selling it to you in Qld. Then you'd still have your local inspection. I doubt if your $6K of spare cash would go very far with such a conversion when all things are considered. You also have to freight it home. Good 200Tdi engines are getting scarcer and of course you still need to make sure the vehicle is 100% roadworthy before presenting it in Qld.
Anyway, if you do decide to go ahead with your mad scheme and need to get some local advice, Peter Brown of PCB Land Rovers is your best shot. He's a diesel fan and his time is much sought after. Your vendor could trundle the beast past him so he could report on its suitability for the task.

Great info, i'm embarrassed that I didn't know that already. Seems to be too much work to do a motor swap at the moment especially considering the roadworthy issues.
What would a Series 3 stage one with the 3.9 be worth, I found one on gumtree but I believe the guy is asking way to much (10k). Floor pans are shot, will need new doors soon, engine is good but it's had a rough life and a brush paint job. It looks like it would pass a roadworthy though.
I haven't seen any series 3's with original motors on gumtree yet. All have the 202 (in one shape or form) which I strongly dislike.
A 200tdi Discovery motor fitted with a 300tdi manifold and turbo will drop straight in onto the original engine /chassis mounts The defender motor has a different timing cover and will foul the chassis mount.
I think there are four holes need to be drilled out on the flywheel housing to connect onto the series gearbox. Lots of info on the Series 2 club forum.

I think you'll find a Series vehicle fitted with an Isuzu motor is not a vehicle to go touring in
For not much more than your $10K budget (and sometimes even under that) you can get a Perentie out of the auctions with a 4BD1 already installed and ready to go.
Just a thought.
