    Ford 250 crossflow in s3 109

Hey all, getting away from the d1 headache until the weekend I thought I'd ask around.

    Anyone put a 250xflow into a s3?

I met a bloke last week that had a military s3 with a 200 in it and it got me thinking.

I have a project s3 109 (6cyl build) with a holden red 186 in it. It's been previously registered with the 186 so it's been done properly. But the 250 is just too tempting sitting in farm Ute.

One concern is that I'd be getting close to the max limit of the stock diffs and gearbox.

It's only got the single line brakes so I reckon it would need an upgrade.

The extra weight well I guess it would be like having a diesel engine.

And cooling I don't think the stock LR radiator could hack it we all know how much Ford's love overheating.

If anyone's done it before I'd love to hear about it and how it goes.

    Cheers

Think it would munch the standard gearbox in short order to be honest but nothing that can't be overcome with some work - and cash.

I've noticed that people keep the auto it's strong as, might be hard to make an adapter plate maybe? I'd prefer to keep it a manual, I wonder if the falcon 5sp is a possibility or F truck 4sp so you get that low 1st gear but all that can be changed like you say with cash.

I'd like to hear how they go on the road or would be pretty crazy scary.

    I looked up the stats
    Power: 103kw at 3750rpm
    Torque: 316Nm at 2400rpm

I love the torque output from a fat six

The 186 stats, good torque for a lower rev though
    D 186(3048)*
    P 126(94kw)@4200*
    T 181(245kw)@1600

The 250 Falcon donk is a good puller and performs well in a Landy, they have a stroke of just under four inches.
To complete the conversion I think a diff upgrade to 3.54's would be necessary.
There were a couple of Series 109's at Cooma that had the Ford 250 ci in them, one was fitted with a 2V head.
The later cross flow motor engine would be a good choice and they were a very good engine conversion in the early Land Cruisers too.
There are adaptor plate kits about for them, just a bit harder to find than the more common Holden conversions.
    My neighbor has a Series 2A 109 with a Ford engine, it's either a 200 or 250.
One thing with the Ford/Falcon six cylinder engine conversion is that the oil filter fouls on the chassis, so you either need to modify the chassis
to allow room for the Z9 oil filter, or use the short oil filter which I think was used on the early Fairlane's (? Z516).
I am not familiar with the Falcon flywheel dimensions, but I imagine they would be large enough to accept a Land Rover 9.5" Series 3 clutch assembly.

    Cheers, Mick.

Yeah I love my xf 4.1 carb its an 86, but have decided to use it around the farm instead to many projects. It's a great workhorse tows hard but its only 3spd auto. But i may sacrifice it to the landy if getting it engineerd isnt difficult or I don't stumble against a cheap Perkins 6 . I read about the oil filter I'd change it every 5k if shorter just the filter.

I have no clue about the flywheel either but I know the bloke I met had the 200 hooked up to the series box.

I'd probably upgrade the cooling system I dunno if the small series radiator would like it in the middle of summer.

This guy was at the Sydney expo in 2017 and at Cooma. He put a 250 in it in the late 70's and it's still going strong.

That's a clean safari really nice!
Yeah I'm keen as mustard to do it but I think ill get it back on the road with the 186 since it's registered to the car first, then look at the conversion pretty soon after. It's good to see he didnt have to push the radiator out to fit it like a 110. I wonder if you could hook up a hand crank to it for the hell of it.
I defiantly keep it manual tho hate for the starter to go, I used to carry a spare starter motor in the auto Commodore just In case had a rodeo that had starter problems nothing worse, lucky it was Manuel. Lol

I had a ford top loader box in mine . Conversion from[ Mark's 4wd adapters ] ? it was a fair while ago .
It was bullet proof , but could be quite heavy on fuel .
