Dave, both of my cats are missing their heat shields, just rip them off. They dont really do THAT much (as in, I haven't had any problems related to the heat shields missing). The system I put on was around $300 fitted, and that was a new system from the Y pipe back with only one muffler, so didn't go near the cats. If your cats are actually busted, you'll be looking at around that PER CAT for generic ones, plus the system. If the cats are still working, just sans shields, leave it untill it does bugger out
Cheers,
Keels.
EPA nailed me in my 3.9 Disco at 101Db, made the green Gemini owners with doof music sit up and notice, had to re-install the std exhaust to pass the noise test nest time 'round
I bit the bullet and had a cat-back system made for my rangie a few weeks ago! I ended up going with a 2 1/2" and a single muffler setup! It sounds great! The only time it's annoyingly loud is between 95 and 105km/h, every other speed it's quiet enough in-car to be pleasantly noticed! I'll take a pic one of these days as it's quite unique! I told old-mate to tuck it up nice and high as I use my car off road and would like the system to stay intact! From the rear of the car about 4m away you can only just see the exhaust tip! Pointed down in the factory direction! I'm happy!
It sounds virtually the same as my old 5 litre VR commodore with a twin system did!

Thanks Keels. Funny, I actually did just rip it off... if it wasn't for the crappy tinny rattle that emits from it now, I normally wouldn't even worry about it... but what a ****ty noise it is If it can be sorted I will be going for cat back... if not, I may have to see if I can sort a decent late model 2nd hand cat... maybe Andy E has a nice stainless system lying around somewhere! I would like to try and help free it all up a bit too... standard singles always sound a bit strangled to me. Either way I'll do some proper research and quoting a bit later this week.
Any others in for a bulk buy?
Its more RPM related... If it was sitting at 2000RPM at 100km/h it'd be fine, unfortunately i'd have to buy Paul's lift kit and Arnott's airbags and fit bigger tyres to change that :-p For now I'm happy to cruise at either 90km/h or 106km/h! It's not deafening, just louder at those speeds! Can still whisper to each other! Still quieter than my torana is at idle!
Cheers

If you kept the standard gearing what revs do you think you'd be sitting at on the 33's at 100km/h Paul? I believe that mine is revving too high at the mighty dollar! I'd probably change my low range ratio if i went 33's, but leave the high range as it is!
Do you know if it's possible to correct the speedo with bigger tyres on? Would my faultmate be able to do this maybe??
Cheers
Keithy
i reckon you'd get it down to the 2200-2300rpm range but you'd also go too fast downhill in low range with standard diff gearing. I do like the idea of changing the transfer case low range gearing only.
you can get a speedo correction unit for the bigger tyres that hooks in to the ABS sensor i believe. I have found nothing in the FaultMate that allows it to be set via software though.
Cheers, Paul.
