    My virtual P38

I'm into my 4th week off work looking after our 10 month old as the wife is unwell.

So I've been trolling the websites and threads dreaming of the P38 that I would build, nothing extreme as it would be a daily driver with the odd trip down the beach or through the mountains. I have tried to keep it real with regards to drivability and budget so it is not very imaginative.

What I've come up with so far is:
Post 1999, Thor - why not have the updated version
4.0 SE - I'm a slow driver so not worried about 4.6 and I do not like sunroofs
Injection Gas - I know they cost a bit to put in but I like the value for money when driving in heavy town traffic.
Junosi spare wheel set up in the back - I can not see the Ms opening a rear carrier every time she has to get the pram in and out.
Hard Range: EAS bypass kit, full breather kit, raised air intake (which I notice is still "coming soon")
TrueTrac front and back from Great Basin Rovers - got to love the exchange rate and nobody will know I've put them in.
245 75 R16 tires - I'm boring when it comes to tires and I like a nice deep side wall.

I'm still not decided on weather I would go for the Hard Range 3 hoop front bar with winch or a custom tow hitch set up with removable winch. I like the flexibility of the removable winch idea but unless your a welder it could be difficult to achieve.

As for the suspension - to Gen III or not. I guess I would go the Gen III when the airbags need replacing. I just do not know enough about lift hight Vs articulation to make a decision, and my understanding is the P38 is quite capable in its standard form

So what have I forgotten, and what would you do differently?

    Nothing boring about that build.

I'd be going for the Gen III's when your old bags need replacing, for better handling more than lift/articulation.

Even a stock P38 is a very impressive beast off-road, so there isn't much you actually need to do.

    Cheers, Paul.

    My P38 ideas,

    1. Something to cure the slipped liner issue, either top-hat the Rover V8 or find an alternate power plant.

    2. Custom Radiator, Silicone hoses, Low coolant alarm.

    3. EAS bypass, Faultmate, MircroPC.

    4. I'd go over the whole thing, oils, filters etc, check wheel bearings.

    5. Gen3 Airbags, New shocks. (not straight up, but pretty quick)

    6. Rear-view mirror with rear camera.

And a few goodies i would like, but might not necessarily get to straight away

Good MT tyres, probably 31s would be fine.

Front/rear/slider bars with high-lift jack points

Air locker Front, Auto Locker rear

    Electric winch front.

Rear screens in headrest/DVD for kids

After all that id have to a take it on a decent trip , with the cooling and slipped liner covered and the ability to handle EAS and other faults, i would feel SO much more confident in taking my family on long trips, with 2 young children that is very important to me.

Fish... already done most of that to mine (and I might be selling it soon to make way for the "Black Label" P38 Hard Rangie)

Am interested to know where I can source the silicon hoses... if I can buy a dozen (or 2) sets at a good price will offer them through Hard Range.

Shocks - have heard good things about Terrafirmas but haven't got hold of an extended set to go with my 2" lift yet. Am very happy with the 12-way adjustable Boss shocks that I recommend/sell with the HRA lift kit.

Tried the reversing mirror in the P38... but ended up going with the 7" Kenwood stereo screen instead. Stereo can also drive DVD screens in rear seats but I haven't bothered.

I like my 33" Bighorns but may well end up with BFG KM2's next time.

    Front winch bar - done!

    Rear bar/carrier - done!

Sliders - done but not on my car yet...

    Rear locker - done!

    Front locker - one day...

FaultMate and netbook PC - won't go on a decent trip without it. I also carry an EAS Unlock cable (better than FaultMate for tweaking EAS) and an EAS Buddy (for quick EAS recovery).

Rather than a rear recovery point, I got one of those tow hitch inserts from ARB. Only ever used it to snatch stuck Jap 4wd's

Am still working on the front recovery points... waiting for my bash plate/stone guard to arrive so we can devise a suitable recovery point adapter to go with it.

Must be more stuff to do.... just 'coz we can

    Cheers, Paul.

    Not at all Vaughan.

I think a virtual P38 is the perfect car. Much less trouble than those real life ones .
