    Removable winch mount

    I finally finished my removable winch mount today. I initially looked at recreating the original RR winch kit but thought I could do a better job as far as approach angle and weight was concerned. My creation still attachs to the chassis exactly where the original RR kit would have and leaves the airbag crush cans fully functional. Approach angle is still a little compromised (see the photo) but less so than the genuine kit and mine is removable also.

    I bought a sturdy looking crossbar with 2" reese receiver from the wreckers (pickapart - it came off some jap van, didn't pay too much attention) for $30. I had to modify it a bit, extending it 30mm each end with some 75mm box and some 10mm plate. Overall easier than starting from scratch I think. After a lot of tacking and grinding I got it to fit between the chassis rails almost perfectly while having the winch in its tray snug against the bumper and under my nudge bar. Original bolts were thrown out and replaced with slightly bigger 7/16 high tensile bolts. I haven't finished the wiring yet but I intend to use anderson plugs front and rear and run 0 gauge welding cable to the rear. I'll make up a cover for it out of fibreglass and gelcoat over the next few weeks I think, hopefully similar looking to the original winch cover which is unobtainium.

    Winch is a Tigerz 12,000lb in a Tigerz removable tray with 28m of dyneema rope.

    PS. I'm an expert at taking off and replacing that bumper, I could do it in my sleep I reckon now

    Right on Clark, Job VERY Well Done!

    That's almost exactly what I have been aiming at but struggling to get to actually start... now, how long can I borrow it off you for (to copy cat)?!?!?

    The photo's didn't blow up really clear for me... does it (the mount) disappear behind the number plate area like RonRon's?

    And also, do you think we should try and get a Melbourne P38 crew together again for some LR/RR time sharing and therapy?

    You could borrow if for a couple of weeks if you wanted - long as you didn't hurt my powder coat It's positioned to suit my exact winch and winch tray but it'd still be a good place to start. The mount is totally hidden when the number plate is on. The most forward part of the hitch receiver is about an inch back from the front face of the bumper. The back part of it is about 1cm away from the aircon radiator. Melbourne get together would be fun again some time.

    Very very cool

    Sounds perfect... funny, I have had the Tigerz tray under the house as inspiration for about 5 months! Very slack hey?!?

    I also have an old RRC rear haymen reece ready to modify, so hoping your good work can save me the mess around with dimensions etc.

    The Tigerz11 12000 is also my preferred unit given it can winch up and down and also be used as a hoist if necessary. Do they still have 3year warranty?

    Anyway, I will have to give you a call very soon (think I already owe you one) to arrange a pick up time place!

    Finally, any other Melbourne (or country, or perhaps interstate visitor) P38'ers interested in a get together sometime over summer?
