First i have heard of a front diff going in a 38
Hello all,
I have blown the front diff in my p38, does anyone out there have any good ideas where I can find a good replacement. Have front drive shaft out at the moment. Would prefer Canberra or Sydney.![]()

Try Bundalene or Andrew E (son of Bundalene) on this forum. Andrew wrecks P38As in western Sydney. Or try PaulP38A in Canberra (Andrew's business partner in Hard Range Australia)

Closer to you than Cooper's would be Brian Danielson at Land Vehicle Spares. He did have a P38a out there a while back.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.
Thanks Guys,
I will give them a try, looking at keeping it pretty stock as its the better halfs day to day drive. I am nearly finished bobtailing my series 1 2door. another few weeks and it should be done. I have shortened the nose by about a foot as well. just sorting out the front guards then rollcage as i will run it as a half soft top. It also has 31s, 2 inch lift, ranch air adjustable shocks, and a p76 4.4. and the usual front rear and skid protection. I will be looking at my series 1 diffs to see what I have for the bobtail as I have 3 series 1's and hopefully a few good diffs for series 1's, good to have a big (200acre) back yard.lol. Thanks again guys.![]()
If you're just fitting standard LR parts, get a P38 rear diff as they're stronger than the front. They're interchangeable.
Late RRs with 4 wheel TC had the stronger front diff as standard.

I've been hearing strange noises coming from the front diff area for a while. Thought it was a wheel bearing, but when I checked the diff oil this afternoon the oil was full of metal 'filings'
So what's involved in replacing it? Big job? Do you replace just the diff centre or what else? This is a new area for me.

Replace the oil with a slightly heavier grade and add the Nulon teflon stuff... see how it goes..a lot cheaper than replacing the diff!!
cheers
When you say "metal fillings" do you mean chrome in the oil?
Or actual metal in the oil?
I do all my own services i dropped the oil out of the diffs 12 months ago and noticed some chrome discolouration in the rear diff oil recharged it and drove it for 100-200k and dropped the oil again did this one more time and still had a slight chrome discolouration. So she went in for a look see one bearing was breaking down (no noises heard).
Over haul of the diff $440 that was at 285k kms.
