Thread: Meningie to Goolwa(SA) can it be done?

I have NFI where either of those places are, however I wish you all the best for an enjoyable journey with your beloved (and your wife/girlfriend/family too if you are taking them)

Most of the drive between Meningie & Goolwa has to be the long way round, and on that black stuff.

If you are looking at taking the short route, and going south of Lake Alexanderina, then forget it. This is all protected National Park, plus you have the Coorong & Murray Mouth to get past.

Unless you are looking at a different map to what I am thinking???

Just be aware that some of the areas that are accessable in this area tend to either get closed on occasion, or dont let you get thru without a bit of back-tracking.

If you are thinking of heading onto hindmarsh island then mundoo,there is no public access to the tauwitchere barrage,vehicle or walking.

About 10 years ago when the Murray mouth closed for the first time you could theoretically run up the beach from Kingston all the way to Goolwa, about 200km. Since the start of dredging and the Flooding it's been impossible. The barrages have always been strictly off limits to the public. Even a local couldn't get permission to cross (I know a few). It's not a major detour to go around the top of the lake, via the Wellington ferry and Milang. There are a couple of interesting areas to explore such as the Tolderol Game Reserve, providing the tracks aren't a sea of mud. From Goolwa you can drive to the Murray mouth via the beach but you must have the tide times on hand as you aren't allowed up into the dunes.

There are sections of beach you can go on, especially at The Granites, just north of Kingston. You can go up to 42 Mile Crossing on the beach but it can be extremely hard yakka, especially after winter storms. The Old Coorong road from the Granites to Salt Creek is also a nice diversion through the national park.

Looking at Google maps it shows a track and what looks like a bridge or two allowing access across the Coorong/Murray mouth.
Im not up for to much boggy recoveries and im traveling as a 1 Rangie team with a 13 year old boy in tow.
Its been very chilly down along the Victorian coast line.

Ok i see the Barrages are just for water control, looking at google they look like a bridge/short cut for adventurous Landy owners
