On that note (and I realise I am possibly treading a fine line here asking a Disco question in the RR section) -

Was the RR engine the same as that in the Disco 1? Would I expect the same fuel economy from a D1 V8 compared to the P38 4.0 Litre?

I have noticed some similarly priced 99/00 Disco 2 V8's - How do these compare reliability and fuel consumption wise to the abovementioned P38?

The relativity to the thread is as part of my comparison of the P38 I am also doing the cross comparison to the D1 & D2. The D2 has more rear space (something I longed for in my D1) so would be my preference. I would really prefer the diesel also but are holding their value very well. I can get a similar mileage V8 D2 a lot cheaper than the Td5.

Thoughts?

Bart, the D2 4L engine suffers from the same issues as the P38 4 and 4.6L engine, but at least the heater job is about 4 hours instead of 24 hours:mad:
And they ALL suck fuel.


I would save the $$ and buy a Diesel, just my 22c :):)

I disagree with the fuel side of things here.
Bart is looking for a highway car, for $8k i cant see him having a highway car that is going to be any good. If you want to overtake anything at more than 80ks a diesel in this price range will be rubbish.
Yes the diesel will be better around town but when you look at the price of diesel and petrol, highway fuel consumption running costs and pleasure of driving a P38 i think the petrol wins every time.
For $8k go for an HSE P38, as long as you dont mind spending a minimum of $1000 a year on parts.

Yeah, plenty of the disco boys I bump into reckon their TD's are similarly thirsty and expensive to repair as with LR V8's.

They all have their strengths and weaknesses... As usual with LR stuff, mostly the latter! LOL!!!

It was/is a good car, but not as nice as his new 5.0L P38 that I had the pleasure of driving from Canberra to Sydney a couple of weeks back.

4.0 and 4.6 V8's (and remy's 5.0) are all heavy on petrol but are lovely to drive on the highway at the legal speed limit, or thereabouts.

AFAIK the 4.0L with Bosch Motronics EMS in the Disco 2 is identical to the 4.0L in 99+ model P38's. Pre-99 P38's ran the GEMs EMS.

The 3.5 and 3.9 V8 Disco 1 ran the Lucas 14CUX EMS shared with the later model Classic Rangies.

I know a bloke in Perth who has a Hard Range lifted P38 with 33" tyres and a 5.0L motor. Last I heard he wanted around $25k for it.
