The only big difference happened after production dates in late Aug 1999. From here on you get the More desirable Bosch engine management and engine mods referred to as THOR. Front and rear traction control and 4 pin diff at the front. Upgraded brake modulator to solve complete loss of brakes issue and no doubt several other tweaks. At the end of 1999 cars had slightly different rear lights with clear sections and a re designed fog lamp lens.

When ordering parts you will need to quote your VIN. As it will be a '98 model. Mine was the same. Was registered mid '99 but realy a '98. Something to be aware of. Gems not Thor ??

Actually Wayne, I believe some of the late 1998 builds were 1999MY with the Thor/Bosch/Motronic Engine Management System.

They may or may not be afflicted with the dreaded plastic Brake Modulator disc issue. Russell Botha reckons from mid-1999 on you should be safe.

My 4.0L Hard Rangie is an early 1999 build with many components/panels having date stamps in December 1998. It is a Thor EMS, 4W TC and upgraded interior trim for a "pov pack" 4.0.

Zuk - yours may be a 1999MY spec. Easiest way to tell is look in the engine bay. If the inlet manifold looks like a bunch of bananas it is a Thor EMS (1999 spec). If it looks like a black coffin, it is a GEMS (pre 1999).

Nothing wrong with a good GEMS P38. Some would argue they are easier to tweak than the Thor/Motronic/Bosch units.

In terms of looks, many pre 2000 P38's have had their exterior lenses upgraded to clear units so it is hard to tell the difference.

    Cheers, Paul.
