For only 5000km those wear metals are higher than I'd like to see.
I'd be checking your air cleaner sealing/inlet tract, the silicon will be responsible.

I tend to agree. I bought the car with a K&N filter pre installed and I believe it is just not up to the job. I'll replace it with a genuine paper filter soon.

K&N's are rock catchers, not filters. [wink11]
an update on the oil testing results:
I have been in touch with the lab and they have given an explanation for the increased zinc levels in the used oil in comparison to the new oil sample. The VI improvers are long carbon chains that are broken down due to use and with that the additive packages slightly increase whilst also reducing the viscosity of the oil.
In other words, although changing the oil every 5K is mandatory for my warranty with RPI and seems like good practice, it does seem that the oil does have some more useful life in it. Not sure if I want to go test when the break over point is though :)
Cheers,

Hmmmm
VII's are polymeric thickeners that shear in use (although some blenders have access to VII's that can mimic base oils in use) but they can't increase the additive levels.
Sorry for the long awaited update. Life is what happens some times when you were busy making other plans. In 2019 I did not use the P38 much due to reasons. When I did change the oil I remembered to catch it and prepare it for sending of to the lab but it remained in my shed for months after that. When I finally did send it over, things went a bit weird. People on vacation, missing packages and what not. All in all, 2020 rolled around and covid did it's thing and here we are.
I think my last sample is pretty much useless (I saved some so I can replace the missing sample but it has been standing around for years now) and I am not sure when I will be running 5w30 again any time soon so for now this experiment has stalled.
Sorry guys,
Cheers,

Seems everyone runs a different grade in their P38s ;)
Mine runs a 10w60 Castrol Edge and seems to like it. [biggrin]
Google RPI Engineering's youtube video on why you should use a zinc-additive oil in our old-school engines.
I own an RPI stage 3 rebuild engine :) So yeah, I was well aware and it is the primary reason I run VR1 20w50 engine oil since the mandate it for the warranty period. I have kept it in and it seems to love it. I ran 5w30 only because I went into the arctic circle in winter and 20w50 would definitely be to thick. So I figured I would do a test with both oils being analyzed by a lab to see if there was going to be a difference. Alas, that experiment as described above failed due to circumstances.
It does seem that a lot of different oils are used in the Rover V8 and a lot of them successfully. I would reckon that old start protection and low mileage oil change intervals are the most important factors in longevity. I change my oil every 5K km's and I feel fine with that.
