What Oil do you use for the P38!!

Interested to hear everyone with P38's or disco's (not to be biased or anything!!) on the type, brand & viscocity engine oil you use.

Valvoline Syn Power 5w40 in mine every time, doesn't use a drop between changes. Fully synthetic.

The same here except I also added a can of Liqui Moly Ceratec and the engine ran so much quieter and improved fuel consumption.

Any 20/50 oil on special of a known brand with a generic Z9 filter. Have done the same with every rover V8 I have owned from the late 1970`s.
I change the oil and filter every 3 to 4 months dependant on use. My latest stash of oil is GTX bought at $14.99 for 5 litres

I just did an oil change on my 4.6 HSE, used Penrite 15w 60 synthetic, the engine seems to like it, geez it's running quiet! I was running a thinner oil before that, I think 15w 40 semi synthetic.

The Rover V-8 engine relies more on oil volume than oil pressure. So the oil doesn't have to have extreme temperature or pressure capabilities. As a result the quality of the oil therefore doesn't need to be of premium quality. So use of synthetic or semi-synthetic oils is not necessary and a bit of a waste of money. If you use your car as an everyday car and plan to keep it with the same engine for a long time, than regular oil replacement will have a better effect on your engine than using the more expensive oils.

A somewhat thicker standard oil doesn't hurt so 15W40 is a good option for use in temperate climates like Holland and the UK. If you already have somewhat worn bearings (indicated by low oil pressure) you better use a thicker 20W50 oil. Make sure though that you use an engine oil with good detergent qualities, particularly for the V-8's as they tend to be very sensitive to oil sludge. Oil as used in turbo-diesel engines has very good detergent qualities so preferably use that.

With synthetic oils like Mobil 1 problems can come up like:

Heavy oil consumption, this is caused because the synthetic oil is very thin and leaks past the valve seals and piston rings.
Bearing wear, the crankshaft bearings are designed for thicker oil and with the thin synthetics they don't get proper lubrication.

Standard synthetic Mobil 1 is rated at 5/30. If you want to use synthetic anyway (TVR is recommending synthetic in their Rover V8's) then preferably use the thicker Motorsport 4T grade which is rated at 15/40. This will reduce oil consumption and premature wear of the bearings. If you want the oil a bit thinner Mobil 1 and 4T can be mixed.

I have used Magnatec 10W40 since purchase. Every 5000k new oil, new filter, it's still clear at every change.

    Cheers,

    Peter.

I tend to use either 10W-40W Magnatec and the 15W-40 version for diesels which has good detergent properties.
The low viscosity Mobil synthetic tends not to promote the rotation of lifters and pushrods for more even wear as much as they should because it's "too slippery": hence the non synthetic is a better choice.

I use the Penrite HPR 15 a 15W 60 semi-synthetic (now a full synthetic) as I tend to support Oz made. Found that the 4.6 runs nicely on this oil without consuming to much. I did try a 10W 50 once as stated in the manual and found the engine was consuming the oil quiet quickly due to as mentioned before with oil going past the piston rings.
