    vin meaning?

    I've seen a couple of 2001 p38s with a Vin of sallpamj and I think it identifies them as Japan delivered. Can anyone confirm if that is what the J stands for?

    see one of the VIN decoder sites such as Land Rover VIN Checker Land Rover One Ten: Land Rover One Ten Blog

    J means it is 4.6L Petrol V8

    thanks for that, but now I'm even more confused. according to that site sallpamd is a 2.5 or a 1.8 petrol motor and as I understood it p38a delivered in australia have that vin. Also the majority of 4.6 that I've looked at are a d not a j...

    that's if I've read it right

    It might have something to do with the compression ratio:
    D = low
    J = high

    maybe

    Used that page to check my 3 Landies.
    2001 Freelander TD4
    SALLNABE11Axxxxxx
    all correct

    1999 Rangie 4.0
    SALLPAMB3XAxxxxxx
    B should be 4.0 V8 low comp

    2000 Rangie 4.6
    SALLPAMD3YAxxxxxx
    D should be 4.6 V8 low comp

    maybe there is a better page out there?
    Clifton Scientific Text Services, the Netherlands works for the 4.6 but still mistakes the 4.0 for a 2.5 diesel

    Cheers, Paul.

    That makes sense. In that case I guess I'll be looking for a J
    unless anyone can give me a good reason to go D...

    Higher compression better power but does this open up the possibility of issues with the motor that aren't seen in a low compression motor... anyone want to weigh in with their experiences?

    there does not seem to be any evidence of increased frequency of problems with HC version of the 4.0/4.6 V8 engines which were delivered as standard to the USA (see NAS specs)and arrived here very late in the production cycle... IIRC in the 4.0 version in last of the Disco 2 V8s but not the P38 as a 4.6...

    Go for it. I think many 2001 and most 2002 4.6 models were high comp.
    After driving a high comp 4.6 Thor, I'd have no hesitation in buying one. Pity Andy sold that one to a lucky bloke in Qld, should have sold it to me

    They are all at least 10 years old so it is largely pot luck whether you get a good one or not.

    All P38's are injected.

    I'm with Scouse on this... D is a low comp 4.6 (per my 2000 4.6 HSE), J is a high comp 4.6 (someone here will have one)
