    I think i've two thermostats..

    RAVE makes no reference to anything in the old thermostate housing in the intake manifold. However when I squeeze the top radiator pipe I can hear the tink of a oneway valve in a thermostate from the old spot. The two bolts for the housing on the front of the intake manifold have also got marks on them from being undone.

    Just to double check, there is definately supposed to be nothing in that spot is there?

    Just to clarify there's no sputnik on the bottom hose, just the normal plastic thermostate.

    Also, does anyone know if you can get these horrible plastic thermostates in a slightly lower temperature.

    Mine had two as well, and although I couldn,t find any info, I removed the top one over a year ago without any issues. I also replaced the bottom one at the same time just to be sure.

    I put it down to being serviced by people who didn,t know better before I got it.

    Never heard of this before?!? Anyone got any idea what models copped the two and whether LR put out a mod to remove the top one or perhaps dropped it at some point. And second thought... How does two in one system even work?

    I have replaced the bottom one a year or two ago but wonder if the top one could be a factor in minor hot running intervals at the moment?

    I'm wondering the same thing... especially since the P38 I'm having issues with is an early 95 Model....
    Surely they are just aftermarket fittings from Mechanics who "Drilled" the Normal Thermostat and fitted the Standard 3.9 Thermostat in its normal place because thats what they were used to?

    Often the original thermostat is replaced with a blank housing (like p38arover has) or an original with the guts removed (like mechanic2you has).

    Then a regular thermostat is fitted in the inlet manifold position.


    The idea behind this is to reduce the risk of thermal shock when the lower/original thermostat opens allowing cold water into the engine.




    So, if you have an upper thermostat fitted, make sure the lower (original) one is doing it's job before discarding the upper one.

    Thanks Scouse, your on the money.

    Between my 3 year old and 4 month old I amazingly had time to read the cooling section in it's interity.

    Seems ANOTHER mistake by a previous mechanic.

    I think the best idea is to have a functioning bottom thermostate, as when it opens it blocks off the bypass hose.
