Hi
The GROM USB2 Plus with Land Rover leads and bluetooth option is the way to go.

It's what I intend to install as soon as I get some other stuff done :D

On my 96 I replaced the head unit with an Eclipse. Just soldered rca plugs to negative and positive of each amplifier. My pre-outs are 5 volt.
Are the alpine systems similar, or is it a digital signal between the two?
A few head units now are programmable in terms of steering wheel buttons.
Hi
From what I remember of my research, there are connectors for aftermarket heads to connect to the Alpine steering wheel controls but not to the Clarion.
I decided i wanted to keep the original look, so the GROM is the way to go for me. The steering wheel controls all work and the 6 CD selector becomes a playlist selector.
As far as I can work out, the head needs to support line level outputs or you need to wire up attenuators to match the impedance and level required so you don't overdrive the amps
Steve
That was my findings in my read up.
But my 2000 povo pack SE with no stacker or sub, only had the cross overs for the speakers and must have had the amplifier in the head unit itself.
So one pro for the povo pack was it made it real easy for an after market unit..
HSE's have the cross-overs in the doors, they are not amplifiers! As great as the sound is from the factory stereo, it's not amplified!
Cheers

Hi
According to RAVE, the amplifiers are mounted in the doors, perhaps they were crossovers before MY99 ?
Steve
Im pretty sure they're amps before 99, and they have an active cross over between the bass and mid, and a passive crossover between the mid and tweeter.
I wired up the normal speaker outputs to a door to see what would happen and it was all distorted.
Could be! I'd say the Bosch update may have included a more powerful head unit?
Hi
They certainly switched from Clarion to Alpine / HK in the MY99 model.
"All had an all new stereo with more power and speakers (300wats and 12 speakers) "

To my knowledge the alpine unit had a central amp behind the sub. It also had digital correction and time alignment specifically for the p38 cabin.
