    Alrighty....

Tested the continuity between the orange and black wires and got a big reading and no buzz. Aha! it's the thermal switch as a lot of you said it would be.

Removed the pump, took off the back plate and low and behold the orange wire was loose (which explains why it worked on odd occasions).

Re-tested continuity and the switch is fine. The motor was dirty after 17 years of use so gave it a good dose of compressed air and fitted it all back together having removed the loose plastic o-ring and fiddling like hell with the brushes.

Popped it all back in the car and away we go! working like it should.

Just now got to get used to the suspension pumping again and determining whether the pump is running normally or too much....

    Thanks everyone

Recommend fitting a pressure gauge on the air tank 6mm line. It provides assurance that the compressor is generating sufficient pressure (145psi ish), and helps to see how quickly it gets there.

Something I always bear in mind is. There is only one thing that starts the compressor (the low pressure switch) and two things that stop it, that being high temp and 145psi ish via the pressure switch.
