When the light flashes that means the air outside is not cold enough to cool the cabin to the desired temperature. For example: you select say 18 degrees with the A/C off, the outdoor temperature may be 20 degrees, so what the flashing of the light is trying to tell you is that it cannot reach the selected 18 degrees without the A/C. So it flashes to tell you to switch the A/C on so that the climate control can get the cabin temperature down to the desired 18 degrees. The system is actually quiet clever, but as mentioned before, leave it on 'Auto' and the system will take care of itself. Plus its a good idea not to have A/C off for too long anyway, as by not running the A/C will eventually dry up the seals and spring a gas leak, and a rather expensive repair bill. For the tiny extra 0.5% of the fuel that it uses, its not worth the head ache later. Take it from me!!
