Wish I knew more to be able to help you but I also though all P38s came with at least rear TC, does it at least have ABS? The TC is just part of that and the ABS function is much more useful.

The auto box and EAS should have no impact on the ABS system, a Nanocom or other code reader might be helpful to see if there's an underlying fault withing the controllers.

You could consider moving to a lockable diff instead of the TC, it will give you better off road performance anyway but I'd be more concerned about ABS.

Yeah the ABS is working very well, Im not familiar with Nanocom, I'll be sure and read up on this..

When I knew I was looking at a 98 with what I thought was 2w TC, the long term plan was to add front air lockers, but thats a fair way off...

I was also unaware that TC was not fitted to all p38's. Was yours a genuine Australian release car or an import from another part of the world?

I'm not sure how you've done your test. If you jack up one of the rear wheels you will be moving with the front wheels. I suspect what you have done by only turning at idle speed is not create a big enough difference for the computer to apply the brake in the TC. IMHO a drive onto some slippery surface is really the only way to test.

BTW how did the winch mount perform on the weekend?

I think I've read some of the info in the attached, but not in one doc, I'll have a good read tonight and hopefully there's a gem in there that helps out, cheers.

No not sure of the origin of the car, Ive read that there are some of these around but not many. I work for a Tractor dealership and different spec models sometimes have all the same wiring looms but with either switches plugged in, or blanks put where the switches should be. But I suspect the P38 might be a little more complex..

I tested the operation with two opposite corner wheels 'CAREFULLY' jacked to easily drive off the jacks when the TC kicks in - haha, still waiting. Makes sense that it might not kick in until under throttle, perhaps I'll re check this.

Heading away next Thursday for 4 days up in the snow and mud so will give the winch mount a test then, we've made up the additional anchor points so when I'm back I'll post an update on the ... Yes, I know I can test it at home but where's the fun in that?

According to the RAVE version I have, vehicles up to MY 99 had ABS as standard but 2 wheel TC was optional. From MY99 onwards, ABS and 4 wheel TC were standard. In regard to pre-MY99, the description is ambiguous in that it says the C-series ecu for the ABS has one connector and includes the "optional" TC facility. This implies that the 2 wheel TC option needs to be connected because all the rest of it is there. I am not sure but it may be as simple as "turning it on" in the options provided by the LR Testbook or a Faultmate.

Someone with a faultmate for a pre-99 P38 may be able to enlighten as to whether this is an option


There's a publication many old hands know of called Microcat ( Landrovers version). It lists every part etc and the assembly line configuration of every LR to leave Solihull up to the date of publication...it's regularly updated on subscription to LR dealers only...but there are older versions out in cyberspace... if you were able to search this publication it will tell you the manufacturing history etc of your vehicle, the intended market, standard and optional features as it left the factory.

The ETM (electrical section of RAVE) has all the circuits. You'd need to trace the various circuits to see whether the TC option is there...or test for it in the snow

A general net search on how to connect/activate 2 wheel TC may shed some new info.

If you're down Bendigo way at all I've a gems licenced nanocom.

Wires 2 & 20 out of the ecu are specifically for the traction control solonoids. They correspond to wires 8 & 12 on the valve block. I'm wondering if between your model and the tc equipped ones there's differences in the harness.

Also it'd be possible that the brake switch is playing up. Do the brake lights work properly, and will the eas change height if the brakes are on?

Also some vehicles were fitted with a 680ohm resistor on the brake feed line into the ecu. Rave doesn't go into any detail about.

Brake lights are working as they should and the eas does not change heights when brakes are on.
Ok, so when I went out just now to check eas/brakes, I noticed the TC dash light flicker on for a split second when I turned on the ignition... Haven't noticed this before at all, and I feel like I've turned the ignition on and off a thousand times while doing different things to to the car.
turned it on and off again a few times and it just happens every now and then. Not sure if this changes anything though, on another forum a guy had the same flicker of TC light on his 97 DSE without TC.
