    Is this too expensive?

    Hi guys and gals
I'm still looking for my first rangie.
This one looks pretty but is it too expensive for a 1997 model?
I've got a 2001 statesman with a ls1 slightly worked 5.7 litre in it, so I like to have comfort and power in reserve when I need it. I'm 56. Yrs old so I'm not a hoon but I tow a 2.1 ton caravan and we end up in lots of national parks and other places not really designed for the stato. The asking price for dual cab utes and nissanpatrol/ toyotas is too high for me and they ride like trucks anyway.
So I've been ogling p38 s for a year or two now, reading for countless hours on here nearly everyday for the last year and almost memorising every ad on carsales/gumtree etc as well.
I don't want to buy one with hundreds of thousands of Kms because whilst I love tinkering the missus gets very sick of it quickly.( was that polite enough)
There are a few low klm examples on carsales at the moment and this one is a private sale and I've been stung by stealers( dealers) before so I'd rather go private. There aren't any for sale on aulro, so I'm hoping some of you gurus might have an opinion on this one.

    Thanks in anticipation
    Jim

No1, unless you are a Rapper or having some midlife crisis you dont want those wheels so why pay for them. If the car is otherwise 100% ok, offer what you think its worth without the silly wheels fitted.
My car has the 18" hurricains for day to day town use but any trips away or off road work my 16 rims go on
You dont see many with very low k`s like this so expect to pay above average.

    Thanks Wayne
My thoughts exactly, the fact that he said he had the original 16 inch alloys is why I posted this example and not the silver one with only the pimp wheels
But other than the wheels, is the price too high for such an apparently clean low klm car?

To each his own , I run 20" on mine and use 16" to off road the car otherwise looks pretty good as long as all the normal problematics are checked.

There's another one available that sounds great except it says
"central locking but needs new key for remote operation"
I ve read on here that keys are a problem, or they are like gold, or rocking horse poo or something. I also remember someone saying that a missing key is a typical dodgy advertising ploy to cover a larger problem.
    Is this correct?
There's also a silver one with 157klms that looks too good to be true, it doesn't have a single badge on the almost virginal paint on the tailgate. Re spray methinks. Stay clear the little voice says in my ear.
    It's so scary

From my experience if it does not have the remote fob don't touch it ( the more learned on here will know for sure). As far as price they can vary for the same year model by up to $7k. I think the fact that you have been reading about the pitfalls you should be aware of the basic problems to check on these prior to purchase. In my opinion a little more for a well maintained one is the way to go.
Steve Farmer will probably see this soon, he has just purchased what appears to be a very good one and has been surching.....sure he will advise.

    Looks good Jim.
If he's replaced all the airbags (not just the ones that have perished) you'd hope that thinking says something in terms of the maintenance the car has had.

Just the usual stuff to check.
    Heater o rings
Does that one have a dounut coupling on the tail shaft?
    Radiator leaks.
    Low/high range shift working etc.

Sounds like you know what's what anyhow.

If it's a long term proposition for you, I'd say the price is right.

you can only get a replacement key from the dealer, that is if you want the remote function to work. There are other things which can go wrong ie RF reciever
It is possible to buy empty cases and have keys cut and have the immobiliser turned off via testbook / diagnostics. A correct dealer key will be 400ish and there are two to correspond with the memory settings for the seats. It is possible to get a faulty key repared

I guess it's a case of personal taste with the wheels. But overall it sounds like a well maintained car. Does the seller have the log books for servicing? It's hard to believe a 17 yo car has only done a bit over 100,000 kilometers. I do that in my work car every 2-3 years . After going through the usual check list of A/C check, EAS height movement, listening for unusual (expensive) noises. Take it for a drive, if it still feels good the extra few $ will pay for itself by avoiding the complaints from SWMBO .
As a tow vehicle they do pretty well, certainly nowhere near the power of the Statesman but you are not going to be embarrassed even with a couple of ton out the back. My boat weighs in around the same without any gear on board. You will need to have the height adjustment on manual when you are towing to maintain the balance of the car and caravan, just a push of a button on the dash.

Good luck with the decision making

Looks good. He says he's open to offers. The wheels suit the car (they are RR wheels after all). The price reflects the low kms. If it's been garaged most/all its life, could be a good deal to be had. Get it thoroughly checked over by somebody in the know.
