4.6 Ignition Timing
Ok so I'm trying to work out the best idle and all in timing on a 4.6 engine (48D).
I'm 18 months into my megasquirt (microsquirt) engine management project, and I'm still not confident with my knowledge and my timing tables.
I have recently supercharged the engine and dropped the ignition timing as a safety net but I have noticed a drop in performance since doing so.
I was originally running 11 degree at idle and 28 degree all in.
But I notice on the original 4.6 rocker covers it calls for base ignition timing of 15BTDC??? So I assume this is a safe optimal idle advance?
Basically I have looked at maps that 'experts' have online and decided that there are too many people who really don't have a clue and although it sounds rude I am just sick of the bull that is flooding the internet.
I'm far from an expert, but some ignition tables I have seen, and even the ones that were provided to me from the micro squirt supplier, have not even had reasonable Kpa/map or Rpm reference points, basically turning a 12x12 table into a 12x6 table...
Has anyone on here toyed with a 4.6 and timing enough to work out a solid base idle and all in advance for a N/A engine?
From this information I can make more adjustments to hopefully get this thing as close as possible to optimum before going in to have it fine tuned on a dyno!
For now I am going to trial 15deg idle advance and all in remains at 28 degrees until boost kicks in.
Also due to the engine modifications and vehicle mods, I can't really use the original knock sensors as the engine acoustics and the vibrations from this vehicle will cause false triggers and retard the timing unnecessarily.
Maybe knock ears are more suited and may have to be invested in?
Cheers
