    Radio volume all over the place

    Hi folks. 95 P38A HSE. The radio all of a sudden decided to become possessed!
    Set the volume and drive down the street looking down ones' nose at the lowly citizens (as one is wont to do in an HSE) and as soon as you turn a corner, the radio volume will go from one extreme to the other.

    I understand that there is a mysterious whitefellah magic device in the steering column that passes on your wishes and desires expressed via the steering wheel controls, but can someone please inform me;

    A.) Is this a common problem with an easy fix, or

    B.) is there a way (without tearing the dash out) to disable the steering wheel controls and just use the volume knob on the radio?

    Thanking you all in advance;

    Don

    That must be really annoying!
    Only a guess here, but as the volume is changing while turning the steering wheel, I'm thinking it may be a fault in the rotary coupling in the steering column.
    Here's a link to the rave description:
    Land Rover Workshop Manuals > Range Rover P38 > 86 - ELECTRICAL > REPAIR > ROTARY COUPLER - STEERING WHEEL AND SRS

    Hope that is of some help!
    Cheers, Pete.

    The original Clarion radio? A common fault in the radio itself can cause erratic volume changes.

    Was having similar issue with stereo in my 95HSE with unit I purchased 1 year ago from Aldi (DVD,Sat Nav,Rev Camera, Flip out single din unit ) so finally cracked it ( temper that is ) and bit the bullet & bought myself a Pioneer double din unit with similar features plus DAB & apple Carplay plus apps.
    Must say was a bit of an effort to make fit but much happier now, sound is awesome screen is much clearer, just need to get adapter for OBDII to make other features work i.e. Steering controls and i think i can also install app similar to torque for on board diagnostics gauges etc.
    Happy days
    will attach photo of finished job.

    Hi Keithy,
    Yeah bit of work involved there, would like to have fitted stereo where hevac is now but access behind is limited by heater unit.
    Hevac unit fits nicely into space previously occupied by clock & pocket which are no longer required anyway.
    Leaves plenty of room below for stereo, then I purchased some piano black acrylic sheet & cut/bent to conceal gap around double din unit.
    Sounds simple but took quite a few hours to complete, but I like the look it gives updated look to dash.
    Still have small gaps to fix around hevac, was handy having parts car to pull to bits first to make sure it was all going to fit nicely.

    Here's my effort. Double DIN that doubles as a phone dock for my Note 3.

    Its all coming out again this weekend to replace the HEVAC blend door servo motors and evaporator.
