    Terrafirma front bumper, TF007A

I recently purchased and installed a Terrafirma front winch bumper, https://www.lucky8llc.com/products/t...t-winch-bumper

In my experience it is a near perfect fit, both inside and outside. Mounting a winch however will require more work to the car. The bumper has a space for the electric motor on the inside and a recession to reach for a free spool lever on the top. My milemarker hydraulic winch does fit, however, I can not operate it's levers since they will hit either the bumper or the cross member on the front. Also, when fitting a winch the AC fans will be in the way. There is room to move them up a couple of cm which may or may not be enough. Once I get that figured out I will let you know

The bumper came with a bashplate but in order to fit that you will have to cut of the factory tow hook, hence I have not done that yet.

Overal, the bumper sits really nice and tightly. You can see the wiperwash bottle though but I think the bashplate will cover it largely. My only gripe is that though the fit is esthetically pleasing in that it protrudes minimally from the front of the car, if you wish to add/modify it to have bars to make it a full brush/roobar, there is very little space to do so. Personally I will make an effort though.

As always, I'll keep you guys posted!

Hi Guys, an update of my experience with the bumper so far.

I got around to mounting the bashplate and I must say that it is a bit of work getting that done. The holes are made into the bumper but they are not threaded so a nut needs to be place on the other end, meaning you have to twist and bend yourself a lot to get them on. It is doable though. The same goes for the bottom part, the bashplate comes with holes pre-drilled but there is nowhere to mount it on the vehicle. I think I'll drill some holes and tap thread into them to mount it to the bottom chassis bar.

Anyway, now to the less positive part. I recently did a play-day at one of our more challenging terrains and the car slipped into a fairly deep right hand down hole. Not the end of the world but a rock of sorts stuck out of the mud and I hit it dead on with the front bumper. Once I got out the other side I noticed heavy rubbing so I got out to asses the damage. The bumper appeared to have been knocked back so I called it a day and returned home. Once home I tried to find any chassis damage or perhaps see some slippage of the bolts but knothing of that. Whilst staring between the bumper and headlights I noticed a bend in the steel. Turns out the bumper simply bent out of shape just behind the chassis mounts. Since the car was quite dirty I did not make any pictures of that right old mess but suffice it to say that this is quite the design flaw. I never went any faster than a slip from 50cm up and IMHO the bumper should have easily taken that beating. I huge sledge and elbow grease got it back into shape but I do plan on stiffening that part up when I remove the bumper for powder coating after I have built my brushbar on top of it.

so, in all, I guess you get what you pay for. These things are not that expensive and made of decent steel but beyond the winch mounting and recovery points they seem quite weak.

    That's it for now,

    -P

Not that i have a RR, but rather a D4. Brit parts and Terrafirma, make a lot of parts for LR. But they seem to be only the basic or a cheap copy of a decent aftermarket item. That why I bought the Devon discrete winch bar. Cost a lot more but in my opinion gives you a lot more protection. As they say you pay for quality only once.

They are very well built. I also added a 5mm steel bash plate bbetreen the bottom of the bar and the radiator protector. It's not moving 😊

Gary, do you mean you bought and fitted a D2 bumper to your P38? Can you give some more details on that? I was going to buy one of Rockrover's bumpers, but Alan says they aren't fabricating bumpers anymore and didn't reply when I asked if I could buy the plans for local fabrication.

The D2 bumper fits without too much modification, use the search function there are some more posts on here

Come to think of it, I need to update this post... Long story short: I tried to fit barwork on the bumper and after a lot of bending and fabrication I decided it is not going to work. The depth of the bumper as seen from the front is just to shallow. I can barely fit a 50mil pipe on the outer edge and even then I can't close (or open) the bonnet. There is also a lack of space to fit the vertical supports at either side of the winch.

If you only need a winchbar, the terrafirma is just fine, just put some bracing in the corners.

    Cheers,

FYI I fitted D2 bar to Fantom some years back & posted process on here with pics etc. so if you search it should come up.
Must say ive been very happy with it & no problems, it actually looks like it was made for it.
    regards, Martin

    I found your thread, yes.

Must say that I am very tempted to replace my TF with the ARB one, if I can source one down here.

    Cheers
