Great idea!
Hi guys,
For those not on the P38 "Facebook" group, I recently posted up a few images of a fold-out table that I fabbed up on the tailgate of my P38. The whole lot folds up with the tailgate as you close it. The idea came about as I'm trying to make my camping setup more compact, so eliminating the need to pack a table was one good idea!
What I really like about it is that I can cook, serve, prepare, etc while still being able to open the drawers fully and the fridge can slide out all the way without interfering much.
Basically, I used the carpet panel on the tailgate as a template and cut two sections of 6mm marine ply (the table part is a few mm shorter in external dimensions than the base part to ensure a good fit when the tailgate closes). After giving them a good sanding, then staining, I glued some thin foam to the underside of each to prevent noise or vibration.
For installation, I utilized 4 large vacant holes in the tailgate with some M10 by 35mm stainless bolts. To attach the table section to the base section I have decided that wingnuts are plenty sufficient while also looking reasonably "attractive". Alternatively I was thinking of drilling holes in the bolts and using "R-clips", but the wingnuts are sufficient.
I had to glue a bit of thin foam on the underside of the "Range Rover" plastic trim that folds down as well as there are "teeth" on it that scratch the timber as it slides during tailgate opening/closing.
I then shortened a few tent poles as supports at the end when un-folded, which also slide neatly beside my drawer system.
Here's a few pics! I hope this may one day be handy for someone else!
On an unrelated note I've just realized I can upload photos from my iPhone using safari! Wish I'd known sooner as there's a few opportunities I have avoided posting because I'm never near my laptop!
Cheers

Love it mate. Nice work!
Looks terrific, I really like that. I reckon I may have to borrow your idea for a future project, I'v been researching cargo setups and what folks have done. Great work. Thanks for posting.

Looks great! I always planned on putting a piece of laminate on the tailgate for preparing food etc, but the P38 was relinquished of off road duty before I ever did it.
PS. Got a link to the facebook group?
Top stuff mate !
In another pic on FB you had a rear awning, can you give us some info on that?
Thanks
Steve

So these are the only pics I have of the foxwing on my phone!
I'm sure most here have heard about them before? It basically covers 270 degrees of the car. There are new versions of this awning getting around that claim to withstand high winds and stand alone (i.e. no need for poles in winds under 60kmh). I've used this awning hundreds of times, literally, and it's definitely worth its money.
Cheers
