    Solar sensor fault.

The book symbol has been showing itself lately, when the A/C has been on for a while.
I hooked up my faultmate and I'm getting a solar sensor fault, which goes away when the engine has been turned off.
I got a second hand sensor to try, but it's doing the same thing.
It was suggested to me it's probably a fault in the wiring, might be worth trying a replacement hevac unit to see if that fixes it.
Has anyone else come across this?
    Cheers, Pete.

Interestingly, I can't get the fault to show today.
It is a much cooler day here in Melbourne today, we have had several unusually hot 35 degree days in a row.
I'm wondering if the hot weather has anything to do with it.

Although bad contacts can show up due to temperature variation, I would not think it would show when the car cools down. (if I understood you well).

If the sensor or wiring is defective it would seem to me that during heat the biggest problems occur. ie, when the car has been stationary in the sun for a while, not when you have been driving with the ac on, effectively cooling the inside of the vehicle. A very easy way to test this is to take a spin late at night when the car is cool to begin with. If the error consistently shows up after xx minutes or hours of use, one might indeed suspect the HEVAC unit. The unit gets warm due to use (currents flowing and all) and that MIGHT influence the sensor. The biggest problem I have with that theory is that the sensor uses an extremely low current to operate and as such it is very unlikely that it would heat up during use.

In any case, checking the contacts is the first thing I would do and replacing the HEVAC won't do much if the wiring is indeed defective You can try and bridge those wires fairly easily by disconnecting the sensor, take the other unit and pry the the wires over the original pins in your hevac. That should not short anything (unless they touch!!!) and with that you can carefully try to see what the sensor and HEVAC does without the factory wires in between them.

    Cheers,
    -P

Thanks for your thoughts prelude, interesting idea. If the fault keeps appearing, I might have a crack at doing that.
In the mean time, the fault has not shown again since the weather has cooled down.
If I can work out how to force the fault to appear, it would make it easier to test any wiring.
I'll keep an eye on the hevac screen!
    Cheers, Pete.
