    thor audio aux success

apologies if this has been covered before, but i haven't seen this method mentioned elsewhere.

i have read various articles about dongles, tapping into the cd output, and doing away with AM for the sake of aux input.

as i quite like a spot of AM (and my soldering isn't great, besides), and don't wish to spend money, the cd changer idea seemed the best bet, despite the need for a "blank" cd.

i thought i'd venture into jaycar to pick up a few bits and pieces. while there, i spotted a switched 3.5mm jack socket. i purchased this and a length of cable.

once home, i soldered lengths of wire onto the socket, and spliced it into the wires at the dash end. the socket is sitting along the base of the fascia, but i'll find a better spot for it as i pull bits off to clean them properly, swap the dodgy hvac panel etc.

the result is the ability to switch between iphone and cd without any interference, using only the input cable. the total cost was $2.15.

That sounds like a win! Do you have the part number, and maybe a few pics of the part?

Id be very interested to do this to my P38 but can’t for the life of me picture the part you’re talking about!

    Cheers

3.5mm Stereo SWITCHED PCB Socket | Jaycar Electronics

Basically the cd changer + feeds go on one set of contacts and the output goes on the other set and into the head unit. There is just enough wire between the plug and shielding to be able to splice/solder. For the negative, I bridged both cd feeds together and added the aux input negative to that too. On a headphone jack the negative is always shared, anyway.

The one issue is that the threaded collar on the socket is quite short to be able to mount it nicely but I figure I'd find somewhere appropriate once I start removing trim to do things like hvac panel etc. I left plenty of wire length to the socket to account for a suitable location
