    Instrument cluster flickering solved

I've been chasing a problem for a while now and thought I'd share the problem here - as it drove me nuts.

It started out with the dash cycling on and off as I was driving. It was if the ignition was turned off and on, and the dash would go through it's whole bulb check thing with associated noises of my srs fault.
It progressively got worse, and when starting the car I would need to cycle the ignition a few times to get the dash to light up (I assume the becm wasn't sending the code to the efi ecu).
Eventually sometimes I couldn't start the car at all, and when I did the dash would stay off for long periods of time, or flicker on and off very quickly.
Interestingly I could hear the two door outstations cycling on and off too, but the green back light and srs light would stay lit on the dash.

I checked every earth point and power feed, substituted instrument clusters, and bypassed fuse box power supplies, and cleaned every plug. Thinking it was a canbus issue I tested that too.

After stuffing around with a mentally deranged becm out of an 02 model (mine is 95) I found it to be the power board in the becm, though looking at the power board it looks perfect.

For those not in the know, the power board (top board) in the becm can be changed between bosch and gems models and with no diagnostics needed.

    Hopefully this info helps someone.

Good pickup mate! This kind of info is so valuable to know!

Ill add my experience to this and say that what I’ve seen personally, a buggered regulator on the alternator will also display the same symptoms. Sending excess voltage through the BECM and other ECU’s causes the gauges and entire dash to do silly things, pretty much exactly the same as you described. Replacing the regulator (or alternator itself) solved it in my case.

    Cheers

It took a few frustrated days, but got there.
Yep, shared knowledge is the way to go.
