Nice!
Sorry to hear of the theft of your D1, but nice to know they are worth stealing
Can we see close-up of your DIY recovery hooks and snorkel pls?
Cheers,
Steve
So after lurking for sometime and absorbing all the great ideas and information on the forum. I've finally gotten around to posting some pics and info on my truck.
I have a 1995 4.6 P38 HSE that I bought at end of 2016 to replace my series 1 Disco that was stolen.
I had owned the truck for less than a week when a head gasket let go and I had to send it back to the dealer to be repaired. Skip to 3 months later and I finally got it back, but I've battled overheating issues up until now (touch wood).
I purchased the P38 with the vision of using it as an expedition/ off road vehicle to take the family away on camping weekends.
Here's what I've done so far.
- Replaced the radiator with quality? (aftermarket/expensive) one.
- Re-positioned the thermostat to the top of the engine and upgraded to high-flow type (with information collected for this forum)
- Made a "Sputnik" from copper (also from this forum)
- Replaced the original viscus fan with a dual electric fan from a Falcon or Commodore (I don't remember which)
- Sourced a set of off road steel rims and tires. BMW spare tire from X5
- LED day time running lights
- LED fog lights
- DIY snorkel
- DIY Steel headlight guards
- DIY rock sliders with tree bars
- DIY rear bumper guard
- DIY front reovery hooks
- Cargo net tie downs in luggage space
Still to come
- Rear wheel carrier
- Dual battery setup with inverter
- Winch bar
- Underbody protection diff guards etc.

Nice job.
Any more detail on the snorkel? I’ve sometimes had thoughts of doing similar to the L322.
L322 tdv8 poverty pack - wow

nice job!
I have been pondering the cooling of my P38 so I am interested in these subjects:
- Re-positioned the thermostat to the top of the engine and upgraded to high-flow type (with information collected for this forum)
- Made a "Sputnik" from copper (also from this forum)
- Replaced the original viscus fan with a dual electric fan from a Falcon or Commodore (I don't remember which)
Do you have any links to threads and/or pics? I was under the impression that it was hard to beat the airflow of the viscous unit...
Cheers,
-P
Nice work mate !!
I see you have a couple of shackles on the front, are they attached to proper recovery points?
Steve
The "sputnik" mod can only be done on the GEMS engines because the THOR has a different inlet manifold.
I experimented with different electric fans but despite fitting the biggest I could find it was unable to keep the engine cool under high load and offroad conditions. Others may have a different experiences though
Steve
The information that I used mostly came from these two links
Aluminium high capacity radiator
This is where to find out about the thermostat relocation
Electric fan conversion (with pics)
This is the info about the fan conversion.
While I was diagnosing as solving my overheating issues, I noticed that it often started as the truck was stationary. I decided that it would be more beneficial to have electric fans that could run full blast without relying high engine revs. Plus a little more horse power is always nice.

Hi Steve,
I made these, though I did use slightly thicker steel.
