    not feeling horny

hello again all, stupid joke aside, i took steering wheel off my old 96 p38 when i sold it to put on my newer 2001 model as leather was torn..anyway. It was working fine on old car, never a drama but now on new car i have no horn. I've replaced fuse and relay and checked all the plugs to horns and all connectors on and around steering wheel. I think it might be the contact ring causing drama. is there an easy way to test. i'm crap at electrical stuff so assume i'm 5 years old . Again all ideas appreciated.

There's no contact ring as such, there should be a marvellous device known as a "clock spring", a cassette full of coiled up ribbon cable. Unless the clock spring bit is done right you'll tear out its wires and you'll need to find another one.

Also known as the spiral cassette.

It also carries the SRS connection to the steering wheel airbag. If it's damaged, you'll get an SRS fault on the dash and the Message Centre.

Not all wires in the casette have to be damaged at the same time so there is a slight chance that the airbag still works but the horn does not. Also, test the other steeringwheel controls.

Best way to test I guess is take the wheel and casette off and you'll have a connector with number of pins. I do not know the pin layout fromt the top of my head but you should be able to measure the unit once it is out.

    Cheers,

Very true. My P38A horn still worked but the SRS wiring was faulty.

It's not hard to test the horn at the spiral cassette, the horn should be a small 2 wire plug separate from the other plugs for the steering wheel controls and the airbag. On the car side of the cassette you only need to touch the two pins together and the horn should work.

    cheers

IMAG1308-20180814-162059605.jpgthanks again to all, and cheers bee utey, i found the plug under the column where the light green and red wire plugs to the purple and black,as in picture, i unplugged it and bridged the purple and black...and horn worked....cool. now i know the prob is between button and there...i will pull wheel off again in next few days when light and inspect clock spring...will test for cruise controls too, not had a chance yet and has no radio yet to test other buttons. P38arover i don't get any warnings on dash except TC and i know there is a faulty sensor which is on its way.

we are moving forward...roadworthy being done tomorrow (missed horn)...

    fingers crossed.
