Diffs finished, ready to go back in.
I was surprised how easy it was. The last diff I did I was fiddling with pinion shims for hours. No shims in this one, I thought they might have been left out by the last person that was in there, but the torque to turn came up ok with no shims. So still don't know why both bearings failed.
Refitted the diff carrier and set the backlash, and the contact pattern came up ok first time.
    This all seems too easy.
I'll put it back in tomorrow, I want to replace the outer axle housing seals first, one was weeping a bit.
I like the P38 axle design, you can remove the hub, brake disk and cv without removing the axle nut - good.

Diff back in. New axle end seals in. no noises, no leaks. bewdy.
Viscous drive seems to have survived 2 months of 2wd.
Definitely getting too old to be under cars removing and replacing diffs.

On to the next job. Replacing crank bearing shells in the 300tdi.

    Can't wait.

    Good job mate!

Not sure about your age but I can feel it too these days. I am lucky to have a hoist in the shed.

    Cheers,

Most of my mates have bought themselves hoists, trouble is they are all 5 hours away in Melbourne.
