    Fuel Gauge reading wrong

    Hi Guys,
I have a 1995 P38 that I am rebuilding and I replaced the fuel tank sender unit/fuel pump assembly. I then put 20 liters of fuel into the tank and when I started the vehicle the fuel gauge now reads 1/2 a tank. So my question is " is there a calibration procedure to go through after replacing the sender unit or do I need to remove the fuel tank again". I do have a VDO scan tool and a Snapon scan tool. but I could not find any thing on them. Any help would be much appreciated. I am in Rockhampton, Central Queensland. I can get access to a Text Book scan tool, if that is the only answer but the vehicle is not currently registered and I would need to get it to my friends workshop.
    Thanks,
    Alan

    Loose wire

Hey mate check the wiring on the unit, I have recently replaced mine, got a false reading, found the wiring was loose inside the assembly. you can test outside the tank, by having the fuel pump out of the tank, attach to the power plug, then moving the arm up and down, getting someone to check the gauge.

hope this helps, but you might of got it sorted by now.

    Thanks,

Hi Casfit, yes I have sorted it now. Thanks for your suggestion. Only one problem now, I have lost the keys. Or should I say I put them in a safe place in the shed, 3 months ago. I have no idea where they are. I have purchased another P38 HSE so I can swap the BECM, door lock and ignition barrel and key over. The things we do.

    Regards,
    Alan

you need to change the ecu over as well I think. The becm, key and ecu code needs to be the same. Also if the ODO of your donor BECM is higher then the dash, the dash will be reset to the higher number (the highest of the two wins).

In the end, would it not have been cheaper to buy new keys? I believe that range rover (the p38 in anyway) keys can be ordered pre-programmed as long as you can prove ownership. Might not be cheap but still a secondhand P38 is not cheap either

    Cheers,

    Keys

Hi Prelude, yes there is nothing cheap about owning a P38. My friend has a Textbook scan tool so he can sort the speedo to The Becm. The ECU is from Tornado and is unlocked so I am hoping it will be OK but I will check. I have not checked with Land Rover but I was told that they can't supply keys for P38's anymore. But I will check next week. The other P38 was a package deal, sort of. That makes 4 of them now. I have not given up on finding the original keys. They are in my workshop somewhere. But I have lost complete bikes in there.

    Sounds like my shed

I misplaced a complete car once. Ah well, one can never have enough gadgets in the man-cave!

    Keys from the UK

I had to buy a spare key as the dog chewed the one working key I had with the car when I bought it. Still worked, but wasn't confident with having one half chewed key.

Back in March the cost at LR was about $600 for the key plus 2 hours labour to do a 30 sync job.Like you I've since heard LR won't supply a P38 key anymore -- but then a bloke in the UK on FB reckons he got 2 made by LR a few weeks ago.

There are two guys I know of in the UK who do keys for the P38. I am not sure if I can mention their trade names here?

This might not be of any use to you anyhow -- I can't remember if these guys can rustle up a key if you have none.

As I still had a key, I sent pics of the blade to be copied, had to confirm the fob frequency (it can be 315Mhz or 433Mhz here) and also got a number out of the BeCM he needed using RSW software. Cost was about $300 for a reproduction Disco II 'lollypop' key that works a treat. Just had to sync it to the car, took 30 sec.

Sorry to be so vague. Nothing like the hopeless trying to be helpful...

    Keys

Hi 4X4V8 I am in the middle of building a second story ( mezzanine floor ) in my shed so I am in the process of pulling everything out of the shed to put up the floor. So I am hopeful of finding my keys. If all else fails I will use the keys and BECM from one of my other Rangies.

Hi Alan, out of curiosity what did you find to cause misreading of fuel sender? Did float level need to be adjusted? or was it in fact a wiring issue?
