    Fuse box shenanigans.

Just thought I'd share this for the benifit of others.
I had the book symbol showing and intermittent fan operation on my 2001 HSE.
The left side fan would kick in randomly, sometimes after driving over a bump in the road.
With winter fast approaching, I was pretty keen to have the HEVAC operating properly.
The book symbol would disappear and always come straight back when the A/C was switched on.
I did a diagnostic scan and it was showing stop faults with both fans and the left hand blend motor was short circuit.
I tried replacing the RL7 relay, which did improve things in the short term, but the problem persisted.
When I replaced the relay, I noticed quite bad cracking on the plastic underneath, even signs of melting.
After a bit of investigation it seems a very common issue in P38s, the fuse board eventually starts playing up and causes all sorts of problems.
I was able to get a very good condition second hand complete fuse box, and installed that.
The first thing i noticed was the book symbol was gone and the fans were again working as they should, which was excellent.
A/C and heater was working as it should once again.
I cleared the old fault codes and scanned again, with no fault codes appearing.
Replacing the fuse box is far easier than replacing a blend motor, so I'm glad I did the fuse box first.
It's just 3 bolts to lift the box, 3 bolts underneath for the wiring, and several big plugs that can only go on one way.

Another thing I was having issues with was unlocking the steering wheel, specially on cold mornings.
I would have to rock the wheel back and forth, sometimes pretty hard to get the ignition to unlock before I could start the engine.
Since replacing the fuse box, that problem has gone, unlocks first go every time now.

It seems a faulty fuse box can cause all sorts of issues, some not so obvious as to point to the fuse box as the culprit.
So if you are having weird electrical problems it might be worth thinking about the fuse box.
    Hope that helps someone!
